The 12D burgundy shell Daltons I ordered from Freeport arrived on Thursday. They look pretty good, but easy to tell why they are seconds on a close inspection - wrinkled tongue leather, a small nick on one shaft, small scratch on the other, and some dye streaking on the toe right by the welt on both boots
Here are some mixed light indoor pics and some on the back patio in the morning light. I think these are keepers. Lord have mercy on my wallet though - I just got a call from the SM I frequently deal with and she brought in a pair of Walnut First Aves in my size to try.

As a side note, this being my first pair of shell, I was surprised by how light they are and how thin the leather is. I was expecting something much more hefty! Any advice for anything I should look for with shell before I wear them?

Are the eyelets matched up? That is the biggest issue I've had. Mismatched eyelets and laces are not straight.

Yep, they line up pretty well. The last pic I posted in the series kind of makes it look like they may be mis-aligned now that you mention it, but it's just an optical illusion of the camera angle.

Concealed Handgun License. Since it looks like a drivers license, we had more than a few customers who would "mistakenly" pull it out instead of their drivers license and do the whole song and dance of "gee, I accidentally gave you my CHL instead of my drivers license- look at the fact that I have a CHL, which implies that I'm legally carrying a gun on my person, wink wink nudge nudge"

I have no problem with CHL's or guns, but it was always irritating when customers would waste our time by feeling the need to broadcast the fact they were carrying.

Easy way to diffuse this is to just give them a bored look and say "yup I got one too" and quickly move along.

I picked up Bourbon Cornwallis and Strand in the bourbon sale, but not sure if I want to keep them. The burnishing in the toes on the Cornwallis are uneven. 1 shoe has more burnishing covering the toe more than the other shoe. If I polish it out, could I even this out or this black burnishing hard to rub off?

The strand burnishing on the vamp area is a bit uneven. It looks "splotchy". Would this also even out over time? Also the captoe has 2 "splotches" of black burnishing. If they were seconds, I would most definitely keep. But for First, I'm thinking of sending them back.

McAllister Monday.

Maiden voyage for my vintage leather trench (birthday present last month). The Nordstrom driving gloves were a self present and are oh so comfortable, just wish they were touch screen compatible.

These look awful. You should definitely send them back. Mind posting that tracking number to Freeport?

In all seriousness, just wear them. In my experience, shell is best with as little additives as possible(polish, conditioner, wax, etc.)They don't look like they have dry spots that need conditioning, a wet rag and a lot of brushing and enjoy :)

Look up the MAC method, it gives a good place to start for shell TLC.

Thanks for chiming in Garland, I'll be sure to look up the MAC method.

It probably seemed like I was complaining about the boots due to listing the flaws out that were found. I put them there for completeness to show that the flaws aren't really major unless holding them in your hands and looking for it. The only thing that would make me return these is a freak out from spending $450 on a pair of shoes - that's about double what I've ever spent before!

Oh I know! They do look great. I imagine that the tongue is the only thing that actually made them seconds. Everything else will disappear over time.

And you got an awesome deal for those boots. Don't send them back. Unless you want to see me wearing them :D

The forecast here calls for rain, so the maiden voyage of my new Daltons has been postponed. Rush Street on dainite gets the call today.

Higgins Mills with the solid lugged sole from previous Long Branches. Wearing Ashtons in background. :)

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
