Hey fellas, 2020 thread is up and ready whenever!

In lieu of all but a single picture nomination, I decided last night to browse through AEAT2019's 400+ page gallery of images to find the pictures which to me represented some of the best of 2019.

Long story short, I didn't make it through the entire thing, but I gave it til' 3 in the morning. I'm sure I've missed some regular posters who more than deserve to have a picture highlighted in the opening post. If you see a glaring omission, please let me know.

If you are getting rough patchy areas, you are applying too much pressure. Also make sure your cloth is taught and flat. If it is bunched up you will pull wax off. I gotta hand it to you though attempting a mirror shine on the Cornwallis is advanced shinery. Cap toes are always easier for me because the pattern lets you know how far to go.

Too much pressure... might be it. I actually thought I might be putting not enough pressure, as I understand you're supposed to be really getting the wax to fill in the pores. Makes sense that I'd be pressing too hard.

And in the case of the Cornwallis, the toe creases made it easy to know where to stop!

my best guess is that the shoes are too wet at the bottom layer from too much water or not waiting enough time after cream/conditioner. Then you may also be using too much wax. It really takes almost none... it feels weird to do it, but tap the hard wax with the wet chamois—nothing more...don’t scrape the wax to get it on the chamois... barely anything on each layer

OK, got it. I was actually going to ask about this and forgot. On YouTube, there's a lot of tapping the wax, but I always did at least a slight drag on the surface to pick some up.

I think I'm going to re-do these shines once I pick up new cotton rags to make sure I'm using something both clean and taught, then I'll use the tapping method. Someone did say that if you use too much wax, it gets cakey and gunked up. Probably what's going on here.

What's the best way to strip wax off in large quantities? Renomat? Or heat gun and wipe as I've been doing?

Last day of the year and I'm taking out the Tupelo's from the recent seconds sale. Guess these are officially 2019 shoes now. Not bad for $98. You can totally tell they are F2s from a foot away or so, but I just call them customized.

Btw, is there any difference between a Strand and a Tupelo beyond the default outsoles? As far as I can tell, both 65 last, same medallion, same stitching and broging pattern. I'm thinking a resole down the line and they could even be Strandmoks.

how do you find the Tupelo fits? I’m wondering if it’s closer to a strand or unlined Strandmok

I bet with a good brushing the area and a buffing cloth, you could remove excess wax and leave a good base coat to build off of.

I don't own a Strandmok, but it fits very closely to my Strand. On me, that means it's a bit tight on the instep. But it feels somehow a little tighter overall than both my Strand and my Fifth Ave. I'm betting an unlined Strandmok would fit looser.

I get the same fit for the Tupelo. In fact, I can size up to a D width from my usual B width. BTW in the Strand a C width is a good size for me.

Happy New Years Eve gents!

Somehow, I don’t think I’m in Florida anymore. I must not have clicked my heels together correctly, ‘cause I’m sure not in Kansas either.

Those of you that have hills and mountains in your daily scenery, please don’t take it for granted. What a beautiful sight for this flatlander. A little frosty at almost 5,000 feet this morning.

Tan dublin Stirlings did wonderfully today. They even accompanied a very thrilled 11 year old on a mountain coaster.

Of course, Bailey was ready for the dog park after watching us humans have all of the fun.

And to end the year off with some good old fashioned Chicago deep dish.

Looks fantastic Strandman - thanks for doing this!

I'd suggest we all start using the 2020 thread tomorrow morning. Don't want to interrupt the livestream of @armedferret hijinks!

Can you get the Chiltern in 6 colors of suede?

Assuming this wasn't meant rhetorically, one can currently get the Chiltern in dark brown, snuff, and earth green.

One currently can get the Dundee in ... nothing.

You can get bone suede in the Nomad and light brown suede in the Cyrus.

It would be nice if AE offered the Dundee in suede in a trunk shoe. In the meantime, it doesn't seem to have any more interest in offering a suede chukka than it has in offering a gunboat in ... anything.
