The State of Black Tie: Your Observations

Thanks. Now I've got this frightful idea for an "evening hoodie" stuck in my head: midnight blue wool, double-breasted (no zipper). Grosgrain trim around the cuffs and edge of the hood and jetted handwarmer pockets. Black silk ribbon to cinch up the hood. I want to gouge out my brain.

I hear that. 13.5AA is a particularly special hell. 14AA works... usually.

    Official Wedding Attire Question/Answer/Picture Thread

3.5" lapels are as classic as it gets. You might stretch to 4" if they're peak and shaped well; I figure it depends on body style. Five years ago I went with a MTM gray three-piece for my wedding. It was GREAT for my wedding... but the peak lapels and high-cut waist do not serve well for...

    Official Wedding Attire Question/Answer/Picture Thread

Welcome! I wouldn't worry about appearing too distinct from your fellows -- everyone will presumably know who you are. A tuxedo is by definition (and in myriad ways) not what's presented above. It is not charcoal; it is worn neither without a waist covering, nor with a standard white...

    Any One for a Scotch?

Spent the weekend at my in-laws' place, along with my wife's sister and her husband. Brother-in-law is just starting to develop his palate for the amber tipples and for Christmas on Saturday got a book on whisky from my wife's parents; his birthday is today, so on Sunday I gave him a bottle of...

The State of Black Tie: Your Observations

I'd have to agree with the above. Pebble-grain black captoes are kind of a confusing beast, and not something I'd pair with black tie. Offerings from Kent Wang or Allen Edmonds might suit instead. disclaimer: I own the latter with a black Dainite sole; they're my go-to for weddings...

These days, yes. Those Badlands were a group MTO from a year ago: I wear mine weekly; they're a fantastic casual build.

The State of Black Tie: Your Observations

I'd imagine Kent Wang would happily put together an overcoat to suit your specific taste. Peak lapels, covered buttons, welted pocket, MTM fit -- I should not have looked at that. Now I kinda want one.

As odd vests go, I think that combination works pretty well. The example below from last year is a good illustration:

The State of Black Tie: Your Observations

I very much appreciate the fly front shirt. Studs are so prominent; I'm not a fan of the way they break up the shirt, nor how they're used in what seems like 95% of evening shirts out there. The fly front, meanwhile, is distinctive by its rarity.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! If you wouldn't buy a burgundy tuxedo (a choice with which we'd agree), why would you get married in one?

The State of Black Tie: Your Observations

In twenty years of wearing tuxedos, I've never worn anything but wing collars. I feel a lot better about it since I discovered fitted bow ties; an uninterrupted band of satin looks a lot better than random sizing hardware. That said, my next shirt will probably be a turndown collar... just...

The State of Black Tie: Your Observations

I was just in a tuxedo on Saturday; after I performed in Eroica and the Walton viola concerto, my wife and I went to a Greek diner because it was the most convenient place open at 11pm. The above has inspired me to break it out again and find someplace a little more suitable for date night...

    Any One for a Scotch?

All this talk of Scotch and friends has put me in the mood for some Burns. ...my brass quintet put on a benefit concert last night for a youth center in Baltimore, and we closed with an arrangement backing a bagpiper on a medley of traditional Scottish stuff. Fortunately it was the sort of...

We're too serious for that stuff around here. Back to preaching the gospel of peak-lapel tuxedos, pushing textbook-correct wedding ties, and lamenting the laughable opinions of brides!

    Official Wedding Attire Question/Answer/Picture Thread

The contents and quality of my friends' wardrobes weren't remotely under consideration when it came to whether or not I wanted them standing up with me at my wedding.

    Bourbon.

A couple years ago my wife's grandfather -- a pharmacist -- passed away. Her uncle had this unopened bottle of Prohibition-era bourbon (aged 1916 to 1929) from the man's belongings; we all took care of it after the memorial service: We had dinner last weekend with family and the uncle brought...

Kent Wang has an option that ticks all your boxes (unless the lapels are a touch wide for your taste).

    The Home Ownership Thread

Good on you. My wife and I bought our 1092 sq ft place five years ago; no regrets (albeit also no kids) yet, and I haven't had to deal with the jackhole in the unit above me blasting her bass at 2am. Good luck! Look into tax breaks for insulation work and keep your downspouts clear.
