I understand the point of view. One cannot expect much western sartorial relevance living in an eastern communist country. There are more important concerns driving the reasons why 80% of the population live in abject poverty.

My biggest waste has been through the procurement of shoes. I have not yet found a fit that compares to the comfort of my Keens.

You would find a big difference in huge cities... Shanghai, Beijing, HK, etc. MikeDT lives in the middle of nowhere. Speaking of Asia, Japan is a sartorial garden of eden in comparison to the US (provided you're not tall or a even slightly overweight for OTR).

Re: shoes, try different manufacturers/lasts. Keens look like crap. You can't expect dress shoes to feel like tennis shoes, but you shouldn't be uncomfortable wearing them. If the shoes don't fit, don't buy them.

Even when I was living in Bristol, UK, I didn't have cause to be wearing a suit. I'm 48 and have only ever owned one suit in my life, which got bought for my sister's wedding in 1985, then it stayed in the wardrobe for 20 years. I've never had any employment which required the sartorial elegance of a suit.

BTW I do like wearing blazers though, even when 'living in an eastern communist country'. I like the look and are more casual, less formal than a suit IMO. My most recent blazer came from Hong Kong.

Because those are where the big money is, and the suit requiring executive type jobs are. Kiton, Zegna, Brooks Brothers, Canali, et al, have many stores in those cities.

Xilinhot is not totally devoid of suits, many will be wearing their special shiny ones for Spring Festival, once a year. They also do get worn occasionally for weddings and the like.

Thing is, I actually enjoy living in the middle of nowhere, best thing ever done in my life. Spent a year living in London once, absolutely hated it.

A wedding in rural Hunan Province..

Nice and shiny, sleeve label still attached of course...Chinese Alpha Male.

i'd bet you've got more airborne particulate matter in your town than PBs got in NYC.

.

Yes that can happen occasionally..

...although it's only happened the once, since I've been here. Sandstorms don't happen too often like that, also we don't have many cars here.

...wouldn't like it all the time though.

BTW I've have been to NYC three times, so I know what it can be like.

Anyway. gone somewhat OT for this threak now... time for bed....good night(wan an) SF.

Are your complaints not unlike going on a car forum and saying exotic cars are so over rated because you live in a place that doesn't have paved roads, or going on a ski site and complaining that skis are a waste of money because there are no mountains close by?

For me, it's definitely pocket squares. Maybe it's the small-timer in me, but I can't justify paying more than $20 for a square. I also refuse to spend more than a couple hundred bucks on a watch. I understand the appeal, but I'm not especially into gadgets or jewelry, and watches fall into those categories to me.

But I get the sense that you don't think the pocket square itself is a "waste of money" per se, just that you don't want to pay more than $20 for a square. I probably wouldn't either these days, but then I have a whole passel of squares, the vast majority of which were purchased for less then $20. My absolute upper limit would be about $30. I have paid more in the past but wouldn't now.

I'll have to say the whole appeal of high-dollar mechanical watches is lost on me. They may help the wearer attract a certain type of woman, which is fine if you like gold diggers, I suppose.

Maybe if it was a forum which specialised in exotic cars and I said that. certainly yes because I would consider that to be trolling. Like going into an off-road SUV forum, and saying off-road SUVs are no use because I live in central London. On the other hand if it was a forum about cars and vehicles in general, it wouldn't be a problem.

or going on a ski site and complaining that skis are a waste of money because there are no mountains close by?

Like going into a forum which covers all aspects of men's clothing and style, such as this one, and saying all men's clothing is a waste of money because I'm a woman?

There are some men's clothing forums which specialise in suits, ties and expensive shoes, e.g. The London Lounge. I have no interest in reading, joining and posting on such forums.

The question was asked, "What SF Approved Item Is Your Vote For The Biggest Waste Of Money ?" and I gave my answers. Apparently the big city dwelling, suit and tie wearing members of this men's clothing and style forum seemed to take exception to this. But then that's my opinions and that's the way it is.

Another type of men's clothing (SF approved no doubt) I consider to be a waste of money and having never worn one, is a tuxedo. Not likely to be going to the sort of functions that would require a tuxedo, e.g. state banquets, first night gala shows and I'm not James Bond. Does anyone have a problem with this?

I'm actually very interested in men's clothing and style, otherwise I wouldn't have made over 1,000 posts in a men's clothing and style forum. Just that some aspects are not relevant to me and I have no interest in them. BTW I'm also an active member of AAAC, again with over 1,000 posts.

Despite the name this forum is not about 'all aspects' of men's clothing and style. If you read the description of this section of the forum you will notice the following:

"Discuss classic and tailored men's clothing and accessories: fashion, style, do's and don'ts"

(Emphasis mine)

Obviously SW&D covers a broader spectrum, but this particular thread is not in the SW&D section.

For years, I wore watches from various manufacturers that kept excellent time but were made of materials that would corrode into wrist slashing hunks of jagged metal a year or two after I'd gotten them. I guess I'm just an acidic personality.

I've been wearing my Datejust Rolex for a decade now and it has yet to break my skin. It appears destined to outlast me and for that, I willingly paid more than a lifetime's worth of all the cheap but marvelously accurate watches I've previously owned. Your results may vary.
