You see that belt or strap connected to each side of the vents of the jacket. What is that called and what purpose does it serve?

I call it a “vent strap”. I’ve always assumed it kept the vents from flapping.

Correctamundo !!

I had a suit from Dunhill Tailors circa 1985 that had such a strap.
Also, my alterations tailor in Chicago put one on a Chipp jacket
around the same time

Thanks for the insight.

To keep vents from flapping? Honestly, I don't get it. Can someone explain in greater detail how that works? From the photo, it would seem that vent strap would keep the SIDE vents from flapping but not the back panel from flapping.
