I think it looks silly wear a jacket and tie when it's 100 degrees outside. That's why for me its jacket all year around, and in the summer polos and shirt no tie.

Except if you work in a business environment in a very hot/humid location polos are not sometimes acceptable. Not everyone dresses down. In fact it's purely impressionistic but I think I see more formally dressed people in the south than the north.

I can't leave home without a jacket if I'm wearing a shirt and tie. At the very least I'll carry the jacket over my arm if it feels too hot to wear the jacket.

What about if you're wearing a sweater or cardigan? Tie acceptable without jacket?

I wear a tie and sweater without a jacket quite often during the cooler months for casual outings.

In the cooler months I wear a tie with a cardigan for casual trips out but not with a V or crew neck sweater which doesn't seem quite right somehow although I see it done.

That is the problem - that is why there is an epidemic of the horrid tieless look.

In the USA you seem to have a far greater horror of going jacketless than we do in the UK. I totally fail to see why a long-sleeved shirt with a tie and belted smart summer trousers is not acceptable in hot weather - that is how I went to work (as a teacher) on days where the temperature was over 22C. , wearing a sports jacket at cooler temperatures. Fortunately the building where I worked was not overheated in winter, so that I would normally keep the jacket on in the classroom.

This is something teachers do over here as well, which is another reason for the prejudice against it, as teachers are generally not held to dress that well (nor do they, to be honest).

Sorry, Teacher.

You have identified the problem. Adapting clothing conventions from Western Europe and Great Britain in particular makes no sense in a different climate. When in Savannah, one should go native, wearing the garments suited to the clime developed by the indigenous people rather than adapted from an erstwhile colonial power. If you don't want to go native, at least wear something that is native to a similar climate, e.g., the kangan and bahhag or barong tagalog of the Phillipines.

I thought Southern guys wore seersucker all summer. Atticus Finch did.

I disagree. While it's true that you see loads of people wearing just shirt and tie in the UK (or at least where I am in London), they tend to be low-level or very young workers. In most 'professional,' graduate-level jobs, this still carries a stigma. Certainly where I work in the City (note capital 'C'), only back-office admin assistants would dream of going to work without a jacket, though probably everyone takes it off when they get to the office. The difference between going tieless and jacketless is that most people not wearing a jacket are doing it because they can't afford one, or can't afford a lightweight summer one. Most people wearing a jacket but not tie are doing it simply because it's more comfortable in the heat, or they want to make look more casual - this is why it's seen as more acceptable. Certainly, at my school, any teacher coming in without a jacket would be either laughed or given some stern words by the deputy headmaster, whereas in the summer, when 'summer dress' regulation were in force, going open-collared was positively encouraged.

I like the open-collared look, with the right shirt and suit - done well it looks sharp but relaxed. Shirt and tie without suit just looks like the work experience boy trying to look 'smart.'

I think shirt and tie without a jacket looks half-dressed and plain awful. And I'm not in the US. I would have thought you would be in the minority in the UK too.

22C is hardly hot. I have no issue with wearing a jacket out of the office when it's over 30C. And without being *too* prejudicial the shirt (short sleeves?), tie, no jacket look is very 'school teacher'

Can we all agree that the absolute worst would be a short sleeve shirt and tie, without a jacket?

Yeah I actually like this look as well for fall and early spring. I always think of it as a waspy look.
