If a loved one dies in a shameful or otherwise socially unacceptable manner, e.g. drunk driving or drug overdose, how do you tell people?

Over the past few years I've had no less than five distant acquaintances die at a young age, supposedly because they were killed by a drunk driver. These people were not exactly highly responsible types and I think it rather likely that in fact they had killed themselves while drunk driving, or perhaps in some other shameful manner.

Don't they get the "untimely death from a tragic accident" bit?

I had a great-uncle killed with Frank Capone, supposedly. Our grandmother used to tell people he died in a "car accident"

I'd prefer if people were honest about my death. It removes ambiguity and would serve as a message to others..

Oh, I thought a shameful death was something like Michael Hutchence. Drug overdose or drunk driving I would just say they had an accident.

If you're correct about them being drunk, you could just say that they were killed by drunk drivers and not technically be lying...

Just say 'car crash.' No need to get into who did what to whom.

drunk driving is shameful so i uess that my difficult, but a drug overdose, as long as the person was threatening the lives of others seems a reasoanble way to go, it may even be a sucide. i would say tell hte truth, if person is interested they will fidn out the truth, but you would have lied.

I usually just tell the truth of how someone died; without being disrespectful.

Even if it involves two wetsuits, pantyhose around the neck and a latex fist?

I don't want to give the impression that I'm asking for advice -- no one I know has died shamefully lately.

I'm more curious as to whether the "drunk driver" story for these distant acquaintances is possibly a coverup.

"Oh. . . he got his colon perforated by a horse's penis."
