"Usually, younger men cut the cinch off to use a belt, and older gentlemen used the cinch and suspender buttons while ignoring the belt loops. By keeping both options, Levi’s ensured many first-time buyers would continue to buy their jeans."

"The 1933 501® Jean was similar, offering buyers the option of cutting off the cinch and removing the suspender buttons in favour of wearing a belt. By now it was so popular to cut the cinch and suspender buttons off that Levi’s retailers kept a large pair of fabric scissors on the shop’s desk just for the occasion. After the purchase, they cut off the cinch right at the rivet and snipped off the suspender buttons before leaving the store."

Fascinating; thank you for posting this! On the RRL versions, like the current olive one, I can't imagine cutting off the strap because what if you wanted to have the option of wearing it later on, when you've become an "older gentleman"!? I guess completely covering it with a belt is the solution, like zippy said earlier today.

I like it best when the strap is lower, so you can wear a belt and show off a buckleback at the same time, like this photo from zippy (post #46712):
Buckle back talk reminded me of these. Buckle back + belt loops + suspenders. These pants aren’t going anywhere.

And these:

Agreed, my only other buckleback pants are these Kapital Lumber pants and they have suspender buttons, belt loops, and surprise, a buckleback you can actually see even when wearing a belt

Why this isn’t the standard is beyond me.

Well, yeah, those are better, but they're still halfway onto the waistband and will get in the way of a belt, unless it's a narrow one. I know, I'm brutally beating this topic to death!
Here are mine, and with quite wide RRL belt, they don't get in the way as the bucked section of the cinch that is in the vicinity of the middle loop isn't locked down. There is imho plenty of room especially when the pants are on the waist en the belt has been tightened. Imho, only the suspender buttons somewhat get in the way, but tbh they don't bother me that much and if they did, I would just simply remove them.

Hey, not bad! That works! I stand corrected and I humbly step down!

that one is more oversized fit, I downsized to XS, ordered from Japan so a gamble (no return), will report when I get it...
Just want to add that if you do size down, thick layers won't be as comfortable. I sized down from M to S, but can't really wear thick sweaters or anything like it with it.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
