Fascinating; thank you for posting this! On the RRL versions, like the current olive one, I can't imagine cutting off the strap because what if you wanted to have the option of wearing it later on, when you've become an "older gentleman"!? Agreed, my only other buckleback pants are these Kapital Lumber pants and they have suspender buttons, belt loops, and surprise, a buckleback you can actually see even when wearing a beltI like it best when the strap is lower, so you can wear a belt and show off a buckleback at the same time, like this photo from zippy (post #46712):

Sort of, but the strap is still too high and will get in the way of a belt, unless it's a very narrow one. I know, we are brutally beating this topic to death, and I'm the main antagonist!
Here are mine, and with quite wide RRL belt, they don't get in the way as the bucked section of the cinch that is in the vicinity of the middle loop isn't locked down. There is imho plenty of room especially when the pants are on the waist en the belt has been tightened. Imho, only the suspender buttons somewhat get in the way, but tbh they don't bother me that much and if they did, I would just simply remove them.

Just want to add that if you do size down, thick layers won't be as comfortable. I sized down from M to S, but can't really wear thick sweaters or anything like it with it.
