My most used tote by far is the David by The Armoury. Works very well for traveling too.

i have a nylon diaper bag somewhere - maybe muji ? - which is a nice lightweight tote with the handle and size but also has a zipper and a couple organizing panels inside .

Yeah, organizing panels is a good thing. The Mismo I'm looking at doesn't have them, though it does have a dedicated laptop pouch.

I don't know if I see Pete's bag, but its from Observer Collection by Thousand Yard Style/ Robert Spangle

This is the one:

Highly recommended. I take it on all trips and only looks better as it gets beat up. It has several advantages to other totes I've tried: decent weight full-grain leather; flaps can be closed for security or opened for easy access; side zipper for easy access; no outside pockets for security, one interior pocket that can fit up to an iPad (not pro); can easily add on to the exterior via the loops; and has reenforced loops so I can tie it to my motorcycle.

I mainly alternate between a medium zip lands end boat tote (same as LL bean but has interior organization plus external pocket) and a softer canvas and the mismo linked below (I bought for like $200 on sale a few years ago)

Most totes will not have a laptop compartment.

Thanks, Peter. It might be smaller than I want in terms of volume. The inside pocket is too small for a computer, perhaps.

I guess one thing I'd like is for a tote that can stand on its own so it needs to have a little structure.

The inside itself is large enough for a 17" MacBook pro (remember those?) but the interior pocket, alas, no.

Thanks. Yeah, the Mismo I posted, is rare in having a laptop sleeve. I like that the one you posted can convert to backpack.

It doesn't stand up on its own, though? I'm making a guess based on the pic of you I posted.
It does sometimes, but there are others that stand up better. Since it's more tall than wide, if you fill it to the top, it can topple. When I put my camera equipment in the bottom half, it stands up fine.
