Check back next week for part two of this series, where I’ll talk about three stellar independent bespoke shoemakers and a promising upstart in this trade.

i'm not sure how time works on twitter, maybe when you're there it's like a version of gravitational time dilation, but i'm pretty sure a week has passed...

Maybe getting into fights with people who do not and cannot accept that middle-class folks can save up to splurge on something nice (in this case watches but definitely also applicable to clothes) on Twitter is more fun than writing. 🥺

The issue is that “middle class” Is such a broad category as to be useless. And that’s before getting into any type of discussion about consumer values. And I’m not sure that it’s more rewarding, but it is easier, to fight than to write. Honestly, I’m happier on the days I simply don’t visit Twitter. I look at some embedded in posts here, but 99% of the time, don’t feel compelled to click through into the flaming dumpster.

Derek takes offense to a lot of comments and I feel like he spends a lot of time arguing with bots, not people.
I think that is part of the menswear guy character. It makes the Twitter feed a little bit more interesting, with more dimensions to it, than just a typical clothes talking feed.

So it is more interesting to see Derek argue with bots on Twitter over people on here?

SF is a small pond, Twitter is a big pond...why would you want to argue with a bunch of menswear nerds on SF in front of thousands of people when you can do it on twitter in front of hundreds of millions of people.

Also, I imagine it is a lot easier to leverage Twitter fame/popularity/follower growth into paying gigs than it is to leverage SF street cred.

You can't get something close to this on Twitter...

Can't fault D a bit if it puts money in his pocket, but, ya, his account does just about nothing for me. People clowning on him (right or wrong...usually wrong) is often far more entertaining than his contributions in any "debate" on the topic du jour.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
