If there was a way to prevent those deep roles in Shell Cordovan I would buy them instead of calfskin. I’m do for a new pair Alden’s and need some advice before buying another pair of calfskin.
I have a pair of AE Leeds in shell and the roles are not appealing to me. Also, the shell is really stiff compared to calfskin. I have seen some people in this forum that has fewer roles then others and if there was something special they were doing. That seems like a new one. Most folks prefer the deep rolls in the shell as opposed to the wrinkles and eventual cracks that will develop in calf.
Thanks for the feedback. I was thinking of the 975. I'll give the same size a shot.If the Grant last is tight in the toe box, I would probably not size down if I were you. What shoe are you considering? I personally size different for PTBs than I do for most other Barrie styles, just to reduce rolls. Regardless, I would work with a reputable dealer and carefully try them out on carpet.
I hope that others interject thoughts as I can't speak to the grant last as I don't own anything on it yet.
An overhand spinning 563 might have been a better choice of footwear to launch. Might catch an eye with a tassel. You never know. With that lofty trajectory it was likely a Barrie/Trubalance lasted shoe. A Plaza last would have come closer. A Corthay/G&G last would have resulted in President Cheney.

Had to share this. A new pair of 986s and a customer's 30+ year old pair.
You can do the same with the deer bone, and it helps minimize the rolls. You might want to try out the "pencil trick" with your Leeds (or any future pair of shell you may get). I've never used it but I've seen folks post positive results about it here, Tumblr, and some blogs.
Those are some good suggestion... Something I’ll have to try.You can do the same with the deer bone, and it helps minimize the rolls.
I do not find the deep rolls appealing, but I still like my ptb. Not sure I would go with the monks; they seem to get the deepest rolls. Certain models do not crease as much (i.e. LWB). I do however, actually like the differential coloring in the vamp area of a cap toe color 8 shoe.I have a pair of AE Leeds in shell and the roles are not appealing to me. I finally got the JCrew code to work for me but don't see anything in an 8.5 that it works on. What I really want is the shell LWB but they don't have that in anything smaller than a 10.
Were you able to get this to work with the J. Crew tobacco waxed longwings? I have been trying for two days, and cannot seem to get it to work.
