Thanks! It's funny you said that but that Red one hasn't seen the light of day yet. Red is not one of my favorite colors to wear and I always find another one that works better. With that said, it does have some nice minor colors running through it and that's how I would go about pairing it.

I usually take a minor color in the square and pair it with the main color in the tie or vice versa. I think a tie like this would probably work. What do you think?

I think this would work well, if you fold it so that the blue dominates. If the red was darker i would the let the red dominate. Burgundy + green always works imo.

I know the theory. Minor colour PS + base colour tie or vice versa, but it still never seems to work out for me in practice. Maybe i need to buy dozens of pocket squares and eventually some of them will be perfect for one or two of my ties. Until then white linen will have to suffice.

I felt the same exact way and would wear white every single time too. But I promise you that the colorful squares are so much more fun. I'd say go for it, it's all about trial and error and having fun.

Hi Gents,

What's the general consensus here of pairing silk ties with silk pocket squares such as a solid navy grenadine silk tie that pairs with a paisley print silk pocket square?

My understanding is that the tie & pocket square should best be from different materials, or at least blend with something different (e.g. silk tie with wool/silk pocket square).

I am trying to grab some interesting pattern pocket squares but a lot of them are printed silk.

Is silk on silk a definitely no-no? What does everyone think?

Thanks!

Silk on silk is done every day and is a classic look as is a white linen or cotton pocket square that goes with everything.

In the end, don't worry about rules and trust your first thoughts unless you are going to a very formal event then follow the rules are good.

I live in Thailand which is a warm climate and sometimes put a square in my button-down shirt pocket just for a bit of color.

Thanks so much David @Sam Hober for the advice! Really appreciate it.

It's really interesting that although everyone seems to agree that different fabrics like wool/silk squares will pair better than silk only squares with silk ties.

I have been eyeing some interesting print squares such as the artwork ones by Kent Wang, Rampley Co, etc.

How come that these prints are mostly produced in 100% silk by default? Given the fact that most people will wear silk ties most of the time?

Is 100% silk prints easier to make?cheaper?or something else?

Thanks again!

Wool/silk blends are for FW, whereas 100% silk is potentially usable the year round.

Thanks for the input.

I think the point I have been confused for a long time is that since silk squares with silk ties are perfectly acceptable (if paired well, of course), how did those "rules" such as silk ties with non-silk squares originate? Doesn't seem to add up to me.

Thilgela,

Silk is great for color and details which is why it has been popular for a very long time...

I have not heard the theory before today that fabrics other than silk pair better than silk with silk so I can't help you there and I don't agree with it.

But I can tell you that some ideas that you will hear about are just that ideas not facts.

In the end you need to trust your own sense of style. yes, it can be helpful at times to listen to others but that is not better than experimenting on your own.

"how did those "rules" such as silk ties with non-silk squares originate? Doesn't seem to add up to me."

I agree with you and it doesn't add up for me also.

But I do think that classic cotton and linen squares tend to go with everything so maybe that's where the idea started?

Thanks for the input, that makes perfect sense since one can rarely go wrong with white linen/cotton. I am a less adventurous person so this is really helpful. Appreciate your insights.

Hi, can you imagine wearing white grenadine pocket square with grenadine tie? Wouldn´t it be too much? Or simply: would you replace white linen pocket square by grenadine one? Thanks.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
