I know it's of course best to try things on etc... but buying things online is so common and convenient. What are forum members experiences with overcoats and other outerwear? Of course, or at least presumably, they're meant to fit over suits or layers of clothing - but has your experience been, a 54/44 overcoat is designed to fit over a 54/44 jacket (therefore being largerthan a 54/44 etc.)???? Size up or stay with "true" size?

My experience has been to stick with your suit size. I believe they are made larger to accommadate a suit coat underneath.

+1 in general, although to be honest it REALLY depends on the brand. and even then, there are no rules, as they could have multiple lines, source from different suppliers, all of whom are working to different specs, etc.

The depressing bottom line: try stuff on, or order in multiple sizes as a hedge.

I have question that is in lieu with the spirit of this topic, so as to not spam these boards:

I am eyeing a Polo Coat sold by a member on this site, size not available, me not being able to try the coat on.
Does anyone have any ideas how much extra room one should allocate compared to ones suit size/true measures for a comfortable coat fit over a suit?
Most importantly my shoulder - shoulder measurement is 18.5-19 in suits normally, the polo coat is a 20 inches wide over the shoulders, do you think this would look odd?
