I confess that my point was less an earnest contribution to the thread topic and more an (unsuccessful) attempt to call attention to its unselfconscious inanity.

Yeah, I'm an ass with a lot of free time on my hands.

Perhaps you can find better reference material, nevertheless, this speaks to your question. Use your own judgment. I beleive context plays a large part in this.
Races, nationalities, languages: Swedes, Swedish, African American, Jewish, French, Native American. (Most writers do not capitalize whites, blacks.) Names of religions and religious terms: God, Christ, Allah, Buddha, Christianity, Christians, Judaism, Jews, Islam, Muslims.

Way too colloquial. This is academia not some weird online-college. African-Americans and Jewish are the terms to use.

Never understood this one. Lots of Japanese/Chinese have been here for 3,4, 5 generations and they are "Asian/Chinese/Japanese-Americans".

No wonder people get all pissed off when the discussion ranges into ancestry.

LOLWUT? So if I tell a story about a "black" friend of mine, you will have absolutely no idea of his ancestry or "present-day social realities" (whatever the hell that means)?

You remind me of the (usually white) guys on the basketball court who talk like this (speaking of which, this happened again tonight, in fact):

FLMM - so who you guarding?
OverlyRaciallySensitiveGuy - the guy in the white shirt
FLMM -

which one? They all have white shirts.
ORSG - uh....he's got red shorts
FLMM - okay, which one? There's two
ORSG - uh...he's got red shoes.
FLMM - So the [white/black] guy. Jesus. just say it. You're guarding the [white/black] guy.
[general laughter]
ORSG - uh yeah.

The only people I know who use the term African-American are ultra liberal white people who never hang out with black people.

I've also heard a couple of Jack and Jill types use it once or twice. But you're mostly right.
