As a kid I would take a can of sardines for lunch. After a year sardines were banned from school. I was the only kid who ever did it so it made me feel very special that they made a rule just for me. The teachers thought they were gross.

If you don't mind the fat, there is nothing better than chicken pan-fried in coconut oil. Anyway, I'm crazy about ass fuel. You'll always find me with at least 1 pound of lentils, pinto beans, and navy beans in my pantry at all times. Also, the crackers and sardines never run dry.

Since you are in Hartford try getting coffee beans from JoJo's on Pratt, highly recommended.

I usually turn the heat on after 5mins (in a saucepan) or just before I serve and stir through a knob of butter to make it a bit fluffier and richer.

Garlic powder, garlic salt, seasoning salt, pepper, paprika, thyme, oregano, basil, rosemary, a variety of chili powders...spices make all the difference. You could cook for a long time with just those.

Oops, just saw you were excluding spices. Oh well.

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
