my cummerbund experiment was a bit of a failure. being wrapped in five layers of silk was far too warm and i ended up having to take it off. i think it looked good, though.

sadly i cannot report on the state of black tie as the wedding was not a formal affair.
one guest however did outdo me and wore tartan trews and a prince charlie jacket. the fiend.
Sounds lika an absolute baller of a guy!

Shoe Question: is a whole cut cordovan appropriate for black tie?

I'm not a big fan of patent leather shoes, but it looks like these Carmina whole cut cordovan oxfords have a nice sheen to them when compared to the similar model in calf leather. Although I've heard/read (but cannot recall where) that cordovan is considered more casual than calf leather...

Half the people I meet think I’m either the waiter (events and restaurants) or the door usher (ballet, symphonies and the opera) when I am in black tie. I currently live in Australia. I think if I wore a velvet jacket they’d probably think I’m in a tux

Plenty of people think that anything in black that approximates a suit is a tuxedo. Last year I wore a ramshackle black ensemble of disparate jacket, waistcoat and trousers to a party that was rather more casual than that and somebody thought that I was wearing a tuxedo. I by no means look down upon or mind that, I couldn't bare being such an ass, but it did emphasize my own absurdity.

I don't mind being absurd, mind you, I always have been. I mean, I intend to get a midnight velvet dinner jacket made some day.

Yeah white tie is on the verge of being costume wear. Shame, I would really like a good excuse to get a set of tails made

I share that yearning. My Philadelphia tailor has been commissioned to make one and I hope that I at least get to see it finished, if not as it's being made. I'll probably never have one unless I win the lottery or get hit very hard on the head and start making even less responsible choices, so admiring somebody else's will have to do.

I had my ‘ramshackle’ tuxedo of a sbpl one button midnight/navy suit. Swap tie for midnight bow tie and keep black shoes and you can head to events straight after work. I’d like to learn the Viennese waltz and go to Vienna for their annual New Years ball...That’d be my excuse for having a set of tails but the timeframe for that is at least a decade away :-/

I know it's not the best example, but they had Bond in wholecuts recently https://www.jamesbondlifestyle.com/product/crockett-jones-alex
