I did, but it didn't bowl me over. I've had the strangest run of reds recently. With the cooler weather this past week I switched from my warm-weather diet of SB and Chard and grabbed a few different reds: PN, Zin, and an Italian of some sort or another. Both the PN and Zin (the Ridge) were ones I've had before and liked, but this time around I was not as pleased as I remembered.

Maybe I didn't decant long enough, didn't pair well enough, or maybe it was the setting, time of day, phase of the moon, or my own fickleness (most likely that). In any case, it's as if there's a taste I desire, I just lack the ability to describe it such that I can match it. One of these days I'll find it and know: oh yeah, that's it.

last night I hopped across the Pyrenees once again with a nice little Minervios. Tonight, I'm kicking it in White Bluffs, Columbia Valley Washington with a tastey little cab-merlot. I'll have pics and notes coming soon.

I also want to weigh in on the Tempranillo question but I need some time to organzie my throughts.

Hope all are having a wonderful wine filled weekend.

Raising a glass to you all...cheers!

FYI, I do not like the stemless wine glasses.

My fave wine glass is this one. The only downside is not being able to put them in the dishwasher.

And the stemless glasses are friggin ridiculous. One of the Reidel kids came up with the idea and it has gone nuts. The whole point of the stem is to keep the heat of your hands from raising the temp of the wine in the glass. Those stemless glasses are not wine glasses. They are cups.

I'll add a few of my faves and all under $20

Marquis Phillips Sarah's Blend Shiraz:

Pillar Box Red at about $11:

This one may be over $20 and the pic is dark but it is DIVINE - Schild Estate Barossa Shiraz

Hey audio, I saw you mention Merry Edwards pinot as one of your favorites. Which one? I love their Olivet Lane, and I'm going to head over there soon to pick up some more and would like some recs. Thanks!

I think Marquis Phillips doctors their wines a little. They apparently run an extremely secretive operation according to the distributors I was talking with.

And unfortunately, some of their reds pump the 16.6-16.9% - WAY over the top.

Not sure how you can see that in a bad pic like that. I just upgraded to a DSLR and didn't realize that the pictures would be so dramatically better. Should've done it years ago.

I have to say there may be more value with Shiraz than any other varietal. There are so many great Shiraz' in the $20 range it's ridiculous. That's not what makes it my favorite wine but it doesn't hurt!!!

I've got a bottle of 06 Meredith on my rack now, it is awesome, any opinions on the others? Last time I was in there they only had 2 bottles open for tasting.

If you like Shiraz, give Williamson's Heritage Shiraz a try. It's a bit pricier at $50/bottle, but you won't be dissapointed!

Piobaire's the Merry Edwards expert around here. I've heard nothing but great things about all her wines.

I enjoyed the Freeman.

I see a lot of posts about Pinos, Shiraz and cabs but nothing said about merlot. Is there a reason for this?

I'm REAL new at wine so I'm going to try and find some of the recomended wines here. One of the problems I have is living in a smaller town so I'm sure finding most of the recomendations is going to be tough

Maybe I'm showing my inexperience but I was at a local store and a couple recomended Lindemans to me. I tried it and I really liked it.

Another thing I was wondering about does everyone like red & white wine or just one? I tend to like the reds. I can drink a white but I prefer the reds

My other problem is I am really starting to like red wines but the only thing my wife likes is Zifendel (sp?)

One of the things I liked about the Reidel glasses is they advertise they can go in the dishwasher and I've been doing it now for the last 15 years with no harm.
