The mafoofan and Thom Browne philosophies are not too unlike.

But he markets the short pants as being definitive of his look, whether the wearer actually hems them that short or not.

But then . . . it's not modern anymore. It's just postmodern. A modernist thinks good ideas will speak for themselves.

Stop it.

Fack me. A Thom Browne / Mafoofan thread. This will be 20+ pages. There will be foof hate and derision. There will be TB hate and derision. Someone will make a tasteless SoCal/Mafoo joke. Mafoo will beat his view on the matter into every poster that makes a comment. TB will be both hailed and ridiculed. Someone will make a head size comparison of TB and Mafoo. This thread could implode SF.

True, but then the same goes for the short jackets both in sleeves and body, as far as trademarks I mean.

It's like how the Christian church adopted pagan holidays.

It'll hit the fan around page 6.

Yes, but if anything, that discredits the Christian church.

The modernist appeal of TB's clothing in itself is a kind of gimmick. Even as a fan of Thom Browne, I've found his obsessive design aesthetic to be quintessentially post-modern, and not at all what he professes it to be.

I don't think so. If it is the ideal that is thought to be important and powerful (modernism in Browne's case, the death and resurrection of Christ in the Christian case), the packaging shouldn't obscure the self-evidence of the ideal.

Close. It's like 90% of the art world. It is what the art world would be like if you got rid of all the people with talent and creative drive, only let college freshmen write about it and gave editorial control to the ad department.

I would add that I'm not a TB-hater despite what may transpire here. I wouldn't wear most of his stuff (although I can't say I never will if I find something that fits and is not overpriced) but I think that it looks good on a number of people who wouldn't even wear tailored clothing in the first place. His attention to quality is something I can approve as well. The philosophy BS is slightly annoying though.

'Packaging', like ornamentation, can easily detract from the functionality, efficiency, or 'message' of a product. I think all modernists see functionality and efficiency as primary objectives. For many, the message is also important because they want good ideas to spread, not be obscured by Corinthian columns and strips of grosgrain facing.
