Where else would I go for decent German? Didn't know you were a climber. You ever head over to Pearblossom and climb Devil's Punchbowl? Tends to be a little more quiet that JT on the weekends.

Punchbowl is marvelous, except I want to liberate that poor Mojave Green in the park office. A neat sidetrip in Pearblossom is Saint Andrew's during their festival; buy a cermaic windchime. If you see a sailplane overhead it might be me.

No, I've never been there. Most of time was spent in The Valley, Tuolumne, and Lover's Leap. Then on my way back east, I spent a couple days at the Buttermilks outside Bishop. The last time I led a trad route was at J Tree in probably 2003. Anymore, the only climbing I really care for/have time for is ice in the UP or Ontario.

I remember when the album came out. The songs blew me away, and right then and there were tons of instant U2 fans.

+1000, this album is one of the great, love every track, albums that you dont get anymore, every band now gets 3 fairly good songs and then just fills the rest with crap to make sales.

Its up there with blonde on blonde in my honest.

In all honesty, not one of their best IMO. There were two solid tracks, Where the Streets Have no Name and Red Hill Mining Town, and the rest seemed to radio-friendly. Whenever I see the video for Where the Streets, it reminds me of the cool things about the 80s for some reason.

I think Unforgettable Fire was the better of the two, and of course, War will always be in my top ten.

Brad : where in Ontario? I lived in New Hampshire for many years and found my way up there more than once.

Never got into U2.....

First time I 'heard' them was 1987. Some cheesy cover band played I Will Follow. When I asked the singer about it she said "That's U2!".

yeh, redhill mining town is excellent, always sounds like a rip off of Luke Kelly + Dubliners singing Springhill Mining Disaster to me though..

Where the Streets Have No Name is an excellent driving song. Also, listening to live versions of With or Without You, especially from the 90's, opened my eyes to how underrated The Edge is as a guitarist.

That's one of the things that I've always found very intriguing about U2 is The Edge's guitar style. To me, Joshua Tree is one of the best albums of all time. My favorite track is "Running Stand Still". It's a very operatic album, beginning to end.

Luke Kelly, now there's a name I had forgotten. That guy has a voice like no other. One of my favorite songs of all time is their version of McAlpine's Fusiliers.

+1. Probably my favorite U2 album, despite its popularity. Play MLK back to back with Where the Streets Have No Name. MLK, the last song of Unforgettable Fire, the album before Joshua Tree, ends with a sustained chord on the organ. That chord is then used to start the intro of Streets, the first song of Joshua tree. Seemless transition between the albums. Always thought that was a brilliant touch by Lanois/Eno.

For me, War was the superior albumn, but that probably has more to do with timing in my life than anything else. Also, they were still fresh and new in the N. American market at the time and seemed almost establishment by the JT. I can vaguely remember the title of TWBB being handed over to them from The Police after War, hence my feeling of them being establishment by JT. IMO, their single greatest song was Sunday, Bloody Sunday, which is of course, housed on the War albumn.
