I've come back full circle to looking at N-1s and am hovering around a Buzz Rickson. My only experiences trying on an N-1 were a couple times trying the Real McCoy's make in size 40 and 42. As I recall those ran a bit large comparative to the A2 of the time. I'm now a size 46 at least and having to guess at how that scales, and across brands.

Anyone with experience, how should I factor for the density of the lining in determining size? For the BR, for example, how thick is the nap? 1"?

I’ve had my RMC one since 2018, and the lining has maybe flattened out over time, but I would say it’s not terribly thick overall. Still warm however and has been my default nyc winter jacket when the temps really dip.

I have a size 42, which at the time was one size up from my US jacket size. I could have done a size 40 though. The shoulder area was a concern on me as the 40 felt tight. So I went with a 42 and the shoulder feels good, although I have some extra room in the chest it’s still the right size for me. If needed I can wear a crew sweatshirt underneath as well.

I was all ready to comment how the IH model intrigues me, but their stuff is painfully small, with crazy long arms the larger you go. But after squaring up the measurements more, I actually think a XXXXL would work for me, except... the arms are crazy long. Like 30.3" long, shoulder to sleeve end.

Do you find that with the storm cuff the exterior sleeve bunches at all, or does it drape straight down?

Agreed with @Mghart, shoulder measurements are key for N-1's. I have the Mccoys n1 in size 40 (usual size) and chest is fine but shoulders are snug if wearing anything thicker so I'll be selling it soon and sizing up to a 42 (although looks like they changed sizing recently so might need a 44). Awesome jacket and even in a t-shirt handles the cold really well.

Tried the RRL version which would have been great except sleeves too long and most likely unalterable. Color looks real nice on this one, although price (like the RRL's) is eye-watering expensive for this type of coat..

Not sure if unlined is okay, but Oni makes a nice version.

This is based off of Lee designs, so you might have luck finding one from them. Knowing Brycelands though the fit, fabrics, and construction is almost certainly going to be better on their version.

Yeah the arms do bunch a bit but I have a ton of IH stuff and have just adapted to it. The knit inner cuff does keep the sleeve ends up at the wrist though. A XXXXL sounds crazy tho. These jackets do run bigger than typical IH sizing I typically wear a XXL in their stuff but this jacket is an XL with plenty of room and could easily go to a Large if I just wore a tee or long sleeve waffle knit henley.

Different color, unlined and shorter than a chore coat, but this is the jacket that started me on this deck jacket hunt. I'd like it for warmer weather.

I'm seeing that with the sizing for latest all-black version. Would do XXXL on that one.

This looks very similar to a Carhartt. Those are available for very reasonable prices. Is the Brycelands or RRL that much superior?
