Our HOA does a street thing in one of the cul de sacs every year. The HOA does beer and wine and we all bring a dish. Our gau gee was a huge hit at the last one.

1. The cross laminated beam would suffice for the load bearing wall?
2. Where else could I put the microwave? I figured since it's a drawer microwave (not really a microwave) it wouldn't be so bad. Since we're not getting a range, we need an oven combo.
3. The breakfast nook area is already there. We can't really expand the kitchen that way because there are large windows I don't want to get ride of there. I don't really need the area as a bf nook, or chairs at the island or a formal dining area. Why, what are you thinking?
4. That's a good idea. Maybe wood on the vaulted ceiling.

1. We replaced a beam that spans about 20 ft with a cross laminated one which allowed us to remove two pillars. We had to have a structural engineer sign off on it.

2. As I said, you can get a combo oven. Here's an example: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Bosch-Self-Cleaning-Microwave-Wall-Oven-Combo-Common-3/1000135217

I had to look that up but sounds delicious.

It is but a bit of a PITA to make. I learned to make it from my FIL during a visit.

My mom dated a guy from Hawaii when I was a teenager that used to make those. Delicious, but as Piob points out, labor intensive. We kept the recipe, but not him. Damnit, now I've got a craving.

Does anyone (not just SF, anyone) actually do "No Mow May"? I get the rhetoric, grass lawns are bad for the environment, but it's just so impractical that the only people who might do it would just get rid of their lawns.

If you live somewhere temperate, May is peak growing season. My lawn would be two feet tall after not mowing all month, and probably have freaking trees growing out of it. I'm not especially lawn obsessed but I end up mowing almost twice a week during peak spring. It'd be a huge project to reclaim, not to mention being unusable and ugly the whole time.

So are you supposed to fire your lawn staff for the month?

Last summer I ripped out all the original landscaping out front and tarped the grass to kill it. This summer will be attempting a conifer and rock garden along with a small pond. Been plant shopping this spring break! Just need to grind out the last 10 weeks of the school year and then get to work!

Will get more, but in early May there is an American Conifer Society event locally, and have a self-imposed purchase moratorium until after that so I can pick some brains and hopefully get some leads on additional suppliers.

80% of the Piob yard is covered in travertine. Zero water required.

Btw, are grass lawns bad for the environment because of the water consumption required to irrigate them? Or is there some other reason?

Totally get that reason in CA, but it’s not a factor in FL except for a couple of months in winter

Mostly it’s the water, but the fertilizer isn’t great either.
