I have a alteration question that isn't covered in the above price list. What's the cost to repair a tear in the pants pocket bottom seam? I know that it can be done. As you take your car keys, change in and out this lower part of the pockets takes a lot of stress and the stiching comes undone or even tears. I know that tailors can invert that area and sew it up somehow.

I've been charged $170 for the following alterations:

- Jacket shoulders and chest taken in
- Jacket sleeves shortened
- Jacket length shortened
- Open jacket quarters
- Pants shortened (with cuffs)
- Pants waist let out

Does that sound right? I know a suit shouldn't need that many alterations, but it was OTR and I'm quite difficult to fit... I hope it comes out well.

If you need the shoulder and chest taken in, you should have gone with a smaller size.

Indeed, but as I've stated, it was OTR and came with a 6" drop (I have a 4" drop) so a smaller size would have made it impossible to deal with the pants. I usually get a smaller size when buying jackets alone. I haven't been able to find suit separates nor suits with a smaller drop while keeping a low price around here, which is sad... don't want to spend too much because I'm losing weight (110lbs so far) and soon the suit might be too big to be even alterable. It's been a combination of factors. I just hope this tailor makes those $170 worth it...

Good tailors are not cheap for alterations, but well worth it.

Here in Boston, Jack in Porter Square is highly recommended -- his prices are quite reasonable, and he does excellent work.

Of course, he can also be picky or intransigent about what he will and will not do, but then that's pretty normal for this town.

Okay- question-

I just was charged $65 to have both sleeves of my wool sports coat lengthened at the cuff by an inch and half. Is that too much?????

$12 - Fix neck roll on sport coat
$22 - On a sport shirt, shorten the sleeves, take in the waist and sleeves.

I thought $22 was a bit steep, so I went down the street to try another place and was charged $18 for the same work, on another shirt. I thought it was a good way to try both of them out and see how well they do the work.

This is in the Los Angeles area.

$120-130 to have a suit entirely altered, this including:

- taking in jacket shoulders & chest/waist
- shortening sleeves
- shortening jacket length
- shortening trousers & adding cuffs
- taking in trousers (the whole leg & waist)

And, approximately $20/30 to have a single pair of trousers taken in & shortened with cuffs.

My local tailor's charges:

Take in jacket's sides: $65
Shorten jacket sleeves: $30
Taper jacket sleeves: $30
Lower jacket collar: $55
Taper pants: $35

BB in-store tailoring charges a lot less but they could not even get the sleeve length right:

Take in jacket side: $20
Shorten jacket sleeve: $15
Move button stance: $7
I don't know how much they would charge to taper jacket sleeves cuz they refused to do it.

I know this is an old thread but thought it may be worth trying to revive since it's now 2014.

I live in San Diego and bought a new suit from Suit Supply (The Sienna in 42L). Took it over to a reputable tailor nearby and had the following alterations made:
- Take in jacket the sides w/ 2 splits
- Lengthen jacket sleeves 1/2" (I have very long arms)
- Hem the pants by a couple of inches

I was not given a breakdown of the cost for each item above, but paid $87 total to have this done. Does this sound like a reasonable price for the work?
