I recently purchased a SC on sale that's a 40R while I'm a 40S (unfortunately my size was not available). The 40R is too long and I'd like to have it shortened.
I have a few questions :
Have any of you gents had a SC shortened? How did it turn out? Does trimming the length change the proportions as in buttoning position? Would the patch pockets need to be moved up?
Before you get it shortened, I'd really recommend posting a pic here and getting our feedback. I feel like most people who feel like their coat is too long end up getting the feed back that it's not too long.

I picked up a 40L Contemporary jacket based on some feedback I'd gotten about my suit recently and I'd love your thoughts.

First, the 40L Contemporary. I've rolled up the sleeves so they're not distracting long.

Then, for comparison, an orphaned 40R Slim suit jacket

I have my own thoughts but I think I'll keep them to myself in the interest of getting unbiased feedback.

Edit: both are the old Neopolitan cut

Odd jackets IMO look better a bit shorter because of the sharp contrast in colour. It also lengthens the legs a bit. I think 40R is the way to go.

Stick with the 40R, the 40L is too long and makes you look top heavy.

Thanks everyone! Do you also have any opinions about the width of the fit? As I said, the 40R is slim and the 40L is contemporary. They definitely feel pretty different, with the contemporary being much roomier.

I think the slim looks better, but it is possible that the different buttoning point and proportions on the 40R contemporary might make it look better than the long.

What's the consensus on the garment dyed chinos vs the regular?
I vaguely remember someone noting that the garment dyed have a more casual feel to them, but not sure that I've seen much else about them on here.

I could probably post pics if you wanted, but yeah they have a worn, 'broken in' feel to them. They are more casual because they're more imperfect.

You're taller and slimmer than me so it might work for you. For reference, I normally wear a 40x31 contemporary high rise to accommodate my butt and thighs, and have the waist taken in about 2". For these sweats, an XL was the right length and waist tightness (elastic is very strong + the drawstring), but the thighs, seat, and calves were way too tight.

A matching hoodie and sweatpants looks pretty goofy though unless 1. you wear it ironically or 2. you're a low level drug dealer, the dictator of some janky country, a suburban dad trying to lose weight, or in the selection pipeline for some sort of army commando unit, so there's that.
RIP, I was thinking of wearing it with a polo coat. Someone posted a dude here wearing a light grey set with a camel hair polo coat over top. It looked surprisingly natural to my eyes.

You have any pics of your outfits on here? 40 contemporary trousers with the waist taken in sounds pretty beast.

I like the 40L contemporary more on you, it looks more balanced and classic. The sleeves drape better on the 40R slim though.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
