The vintage watches I suggested were proper gold - if you want pretend gold, anywhere from $50 up is good! But personally I think it's tacky.
Meh, obviously if I can find proper gold that'd be best, if nothing comes through I'd settle for capped or plated as well.

Yeah fair enough, it's the fake plasticky stuff I don't like.

OK, now I have to step up: a couple of rose gold beauties from a brief search.

Solid gold, vintage, 35mm, $440

Gold plated, modern, 40mm, $499

I prefer the former as a value proposition, and I'm also a little biased against simple dates on dress watches. But each to his own; just wanted to illustrate how $500 can get a surprisingly fancy watch. Good luck!

P.S. Save $70-100 for a black alligator or shell cordovan strap - then you're really into a world of class!

That Frederique Constant is really nice, looks like a poor man's PP Calatrava to me!

And that is really my issue with FC: it tends to look like a poor man's "something" rather than have its own distinctive design language. But it's inherently a nice enough watch. I think the Doxa has more character and class, though. And change for that fancy new strap. :)

I get that. It's probably one of the reasons I like this FC as I do not see myself ever buying the JLC "version" and it is a nice quality watch with an in-house movement. Just outside the PMW thread limit, though:
