Are you using the braces? I think it help. The OP's second pic is ok imo, but if you perfer less break, I think it could be shorten by 1/4-1/2 in at the front. Cutting hem at an angle is just normal, why would it be silly? It is known as "Regimental Bottoms".
My tailor did not say it was 'silly', just that the amount of angle he would have to put in would be excessive. I now understand that to have less break in the front, I need to rethink where the back of the pant will reach. I thought the pant could reach the heel in the back and also have no break in the front. Turns out that is not possible, if I understand correctly... Edit: I am not using braces... how would they help?
