Yup, thought it was mediocre when I first saw it on opening night and the longer I've had to think about this movie the less I like it. It's derivative, very little is explained, the overwhelming fan-service is a disservice. To your point, they blow up 5 planets and before I can let the atrocity sink in, they switch scenes. It would have been a watershed moment in any other movie but it get's dismissed immediately.
Much more looking forward to the next one that isn't a typical paint-by-numbers JJ Abrams template. None of his movies have heart or soul.
The more I think about the movie - I saw it only two weeks ago - the more I downgrade it. First hour was excellent, the rest was disappointing for me.
@Journeyman thanks, yeah, super annoying that the movie isn't self explanatory. I guess you have to leave room for the toys and book tie-ins, take all the dollars
Also: another JJ Abrams movie with a casual depiction of mass murder, sure, that's following in the trail of Lucas but it would be nice not to inherit all of Lucas' failures.
Still, I'm excited to see what happens next.
