Why don't you start a Canadian Society for Mallorcan Folk-Dancing? You could then argue that it requires Genuine Mallorcan Shoes

. Obviously you will need the rest of the kit to match, or all the pretty Mallorcan girls will laugh contemptuously at you.
Laughs as we may, but styles and fashion are cyclical. Can't wait for the bubble pants to be fashionable again...

Got pics from Pepe of the sample austerity boot. Will post when back in WiFi cover. Pay attention, there will be questions!

OK obviously ignore the fact they're black and have speed hooks! First questions to start the ball rolling; do we want the wingtip to come further back along the sides and do we want the back strip piped as it is here or plain and if piped, do we also want the wing piped?

Thanks for the pictures, great job! I like the way the back looks, very nice!
I'd prefer the wingtip to come back a lot further. I have attached some pictures that come pretty close to my ideal austerity boot:

The Meermin boot looks odd with the wingtip so far forward. What do you think?

EDIT: Kinda like the Carmina austerity boot as well:

EDIT2: The angle of the line that goes to the back is also too steep. Look at the other pictures to compare.

Edward Green/Gaziano Girling/Carmina. Do they have austerity brogues? Would not be a bad idea looking at how they do it knowing the fact that their shooz are 95% of the time just plain and simple fu**ing awesome.

Carmina boot for Epaulet.

Now that I've looked through the pictures on full screen I don't know.... I just don't know. But the zig zag. No way. That is disgusting and ruins the whole boot.

That carmina boot is very nice, but the wingtip line should go back a little further. It should be closer to that other line going to the back. Note how that line is not as steep as the Meermin MTO. Those are the reasons the Meermin boot looks so bad: the wingtip is too forward, and the other line is too steep.

Like this:

Or maybe even like this:

Probably prefer the second one.

Pull the wing back.

Did we agree on the addition of the pull tab? I thought they weren't part of the make-up. I could be wrong.

The pull tab was included unless expressly stated that you didn't want it. G you did say that you only wanted it if it was made from the back strip.
I agree the wing needs to be longer but I don't want a carbon copy of the Carmina. If the wing angle is right I think the side seam is good as it is but I'm open to dropping it half an inch or so.
Only one decisive answer re the piping on the back strip, a decisive no!

Ahh the drawings by Monkeyface make sense and I agree with him. Also starting to agree with pulling the wing back.

^OJ so no hideous zig zag **** if I understood this right?

I understand you don't want a carbon copy of Carmina, I don't want that either. But it wouldn't make sense to be different just for the sake of being different, especially if it makes the boot look worse.
How about using elements from both Vass and Carmina? I like the way the wingtip goes on the Vass boots, but I don't like rest of the boot, so you can ignore that.

Does piping refer to the zigzag back strip? I like it, but not like the Meermin boots, it looks a little gaudy. More subtle piping like this would be nice, but I wouldn't mind if we leave it out altogether either.

Re wing - I think the wing's placement with regards to throat line and toe is placed correctly (roughly bisects the vamp), though I don't know if anyone was speaking about this. It looks much better in the 1st pic than the 2nd. However, I agree about increasing the length of the wing's line closer to the waist of the shoe (3rd pic).
Re angle of balmoral line - No preference. I think it looks good currently.
Re pull tabs - I don't think it was explicitly stated, but I thought the image we based the design off of had pull tabs (4th pic). I would prefer them as they make it easier to slip on/off and shouldn't be seen anyway.
Re back strip - From my understanding of piping versus plain, I'd prefer the latter.

I was just talking about increasing the length of the wing's line, so it comes closer to the waist. I agree when it comes to the placement of the wing itself.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
