I don't really wear loafers (prefer lace-up boots, brogues, bals or bluchers) but I have a chance to cop these (AE Randolph, black) for cheap. What would they look good with? My dark jeans? Chinos?

I had these in shell cordovan but sold them on eBay because they're not substantial enough to go with jeans. They're too sleek to look good with jeans imho.

Yeah, black loafers are too formal to wear casually - because they're black - and too casual to wear formally - because they're loafers. Find something in brown - if money's no object, theshoemart.com has Alden Leisure Handsewn penny loafers in cigar shell that are category killers. Otherwise find AE in brown.

I agree that you could try them with dark denim, but also think a pair in brown would be more versatile for wearing with both khakis, jeans and other odd trousers.

Yesterday I happened to try on that exact shoe style at the nearby AE store. I went through several different widths and lengths and was unable to find a combination that fit--they were either too tight or slipping in the heel. If the shoe you're ordering doesn't fit, I hope you'll be able to return it or sell it. I'm resolved not to order shoes without first trying them on.

Incidentally, this shoe is much like Alden's full strap slip on, which I tried on two days ago. The main difference is that the vamp on the AE version is longer.
