I'm talking late 70's/early eighties. I'm talking about before Run DMC blew up with "Sucker MC", I'm talking before Kurtis Blow became the first rapper to do a verse on a non rap song (Chaka Khan). I'm talking about T La Rock, Cold Crush Brothers, Furious Five, Melle Mel etc etc. Let's hear your take on that period of rap.

Preach it, Brotha Ed!

Words and content are two different things. Someone can rap about going to the deli and getting milk and make it interesting in the same way that someone can rap about an infinitely interesting topic and make it very boring.

BTW, your boy Common was interviewed a day or two ago. He was asked about the "controversial" current top ten MC's list that MTC put together (Lil Wayne was 1, Common was in the top five I think.) When he was asked who are his personal top rapper right now, after mentioning Fabolous and Papoose and Jay Z, he said that Lil Wayne is essentially the best out right now. So I guess he doesn't know what he is talking about either.

you're right about making something interesting or dull, but that doesn't differentiate words and content. what someone is saying = content.

"To me when judging rappers skill, it's irrelevant what they are talking about"

still not making sense.

if he said that Lil Wayne is the best rapper alive, I'd be interested in reading this interview.

It was last night (11-11:30ish or so) on Funkmaster Flex's radio show here in NYC. Anyway, it's only music, really don't give this much of a **** about it. Listen to what you want, I'll listen to what I like and everyone is happy.

Common is the knowledge, best to check your facts;
He'd sell his grandma out for a check from the Gap.

Lil' Wayne the greatest? Maybe Lil' commercial anus.
Minute fourteen of his fifteen minutes famous -
in four or five years, he's a rapping lounge act in Vegas.

I'm not sure Lil Wayne won't be around, given he has made it 10+ years already.

To another poster:

I try to defend Wayne, but how in the world is Common, Mos Def, Kanye and Talib garbage? I don't mind a mix from time to time, sometimes I listen for the beats, but for the most part, I listen for the content. Rap needs the diversity to stay alive, and it's all just a matter of taste. If content wasn't a factor, we would have an industry full of cats like 50 cents (it seems its getting that way).

Speaking of delivery has anyone heard the new Keith Murray track, I forgot how sick Murrays flow was.

My bad Toyko, he won't be doing lounge acts in 5 years.

This may be off topic, but what is 50 cent smoking for him to challenge Kanye on record sells?
