I just noticed today that the buttons on my Sutherland trench (that I've had since the spring) have crumbled like limestone! I've never seen anything like it. I called J. Crew up and they offered to either send me buttons and reimburse me for tailoring costs or do an exchange. They said that no one else has reported this issue before, so it may have just been a manufacturing defect on my buttons. Anyone else experienced something similar?

This is what I don't understand. Their XS stuff sells out very quickly. Common sense would dictate that they should make more of these and less of the XL/XXL varieties, right?

Yep. They haven't quite entirely crumbled yet but on the back side of two of the large front buttons it feels like somebody has sanded them with course sandpaper. I just noticed this after putting it through a cold delicate wash. If I run my thumb across it smalls sandy bits will come off. I got this one off ebay. Was new w/ tags but had the label marked out w/ black sharpie. Seems like a batch of buttons had some ingredient left out and the plastic is breaking down prematurely.

Please call customer service and let them know! They'll send you replacement buttons I'm sure. Just say you bought it in-store. It's also useful to let them know for quality-control purposes.

Thanks for checking.

I have two and like them but have no illusions that they're anything fantastic. Value is in the eyes of the beholder, but I think they're worth ~$100 or so when they go on sale, no thanks at full retail. Treat them well and they'll last a while.
