I need some advice on a used SUV...

I'm going to buy a (used) SUV. That's certain.

Any reason it shouldn't be a 2002-2004 Land Rover Discovery?

Any other suggestions?

LRD are terribly unreliable. Plus, maintenance is out of this world.

Check out an 02-05 Nissan Pathfinder LE with the 3.5L. My brother picked one up not too long ago. It's a great ride. Perfect mix of ruggedness and class/luxury.

They are known to be quite reliable. Almost forgot to mention, they haul ass!

I'd be happy with any 4runner from 1980 to present. The things are indestructible... that chassis started solid and toyota has just continued to perfect it. For myself, if I was buying a used SUV in the 10-15k price range that would be my only choice.

Amazingly the Tahoe/Suburban are exceptional long haul SUVs and very reliable....and yes, in Texas we have a lot of experience with them!
The LaRD is just that....a useless piece of fat.
The MDX, 4Runner are much better.

Cadillac SRX - it was a great buy for me. Just a little more than 15k but just great.

Don't get a LR, they're nice but don't work outside the UK. Something US otr Japanese seems like a better alternative.

Saab used to be good...until they were bought out by GM in 2000/2001 (or whenever it was).

IIRC, be wary of their drivetrains with the exception of the 9-2x, which is directly from subaru. The overall fit and finish of the newer saabs is pretty cheap/chincy, IMO.

I say, if you're going to get an SUV, get one that isn't built on a car platform. Get something that does WORK. Otherwise, save yourself the headache of driving around a large vehicle for absolutely know reason (high insurance, high fuel consumption, high just about everything) and get a nicer car for less money.

I wouldn't consider pre GM Saab any better to be honest with you...

I probably should have posted this in the first comment, but I'm 6'8". I'm going to buy a vehicle I fit in, and one that I don't have to crawl into. To me, the comfort is worth the additional costs. The 4WD will be nice to have, too, for those uncertain situations.
