I knew this because of Band of Brothers. I just saw Parade's End (BBC miniseries) and realized that Al Capone from Boardwalk Empire is also British (he's also in BoB). A lot of these guys were in BoB because it was filmed in England and I remember reading they had a quota of British actors they to meet. Damien Lewis, Stephen Graham, Simon Pegg, James McAvoy, the guy who plays Moriarty in Sherlock (who I just looked up and is actually Irish). Every time I watch that series I recognize someone else who's gone on to other high profile projects.

I was blown away when I heard Idris Elba interviewed, he was in The Wire as Stringer Bell. I would have bet my house he grew up in a ghetto and was using it for the role. He remarked that he hid the fact he was British in the audition and they had no clue.

Britons are more used to the American accent than we are to the British accent. Just listen to basically any British rock music.
