Folks would appreciate input on english grain leather. Is it soft and pliable like EG's london grain, or more comparable to country calf or scotch grain? I've seen plenty of Glencoe and Urban Commandi in this leather, which leads me to believe it's a a good option for the Thorpe. Figured I'd ask around before I pull the trigger

Getting the most out of my cool-weather footwear while the temperatures permit.
Wiltshire MTOs in Burgundy Highland Grain and Wensum soles (my third pair of G&Gs, from Fall 2015), with De Bonne Facture tweed trousers and REI hiking socks.

With 1791 pages (and counting) I apologize if this was covered, but my eyes are glazing over and I’ve done my best with searches.

I’m considering my first pair(s) of G&G and all of these looks amazing and everything in the shop looks spectacular. . . But how do they wear?

I read one post that said they fry out and don’t take a polish m, but that’s one post. I’d love to hear from more of you how yours wore over the years.

Thank you.

I’ve not had a problem with the leather quality and the leather soles last longer than most as they use Baker’s of Devon sole leather - it’s the best IME. That said, I have seen photos of G&G shoes on here where the leather looks dry a d/or with broad creases in - sign of lesser quality skin. But G&G are fabulous with customer service and will remake a shoe you’re not happy with. So I think you can confidently go ahead with buying a pair

The leather quality is great. My three pairs take a great polish but wear heavy. It feels like I am wearing a truck. I don't mind it.

I’ve bought 40+ pairs of GG over the last 12 years. I’ve sold on quite a few with no complaints, and some of my favourites are 10 years old. In terms of how they’ve worn, it’s 40 shades of fantastic - some better than others, but even the least resilient examples I’ve had are better than 99.9% of the shoes I see outside the SF echo chamber 🙂. So buy with confidence.

What trees do you guys use with your G&G boots? I have two pairs (Wigmores and Urban Commandos) with the standard G&G trees, but I don't like how they stretch the ankles - I've been getting unsightly horizontal rolls set into the leather. They're also pretty hard to insert and remove. The G&G trees are perfect for the shoes... but it seems they're suboptimal for the boots, even before you consider that they're 200gbp a pair.
