Apparently EG is introducing a new model, the Earl, on the 137 last. Looks like a slightly chunkier version of the Duke.

Hmmmm at first glance not a big fan. What are others’ thoughts?

I like to go under the radar more often than not. Less glossy EGs is a great option and alternative for walking in the best without calling for tons of attention. Waxed and 'satin' leathers are fantastic options and I'm all for it!

The Duke is currently my favourite model of E.G. loafers. I don't put heavy miles on my Dukes due to the single leather soles that they are fitted with. Basically I wear them to the office, when going out or running errands in the neighbourhood.

I think the Earl is more utilitarian with its thicker rubber soles could serve as a workhorse loafer that could handle a lot of miles in an urban environment and could furthermore be paired with more casual outfits (slacks, jeans and perhaps some classy shorts) contrary to some of E.G's sleeker and more elegantly styled loafers that might look out of place when paired with more casual wear.

I agree with those who are lukewarm about the Earl loafer. I like the 137 last as it is a better fit for me than the 184 last. However on that sole and in that leather it does look less EG and more Trickers. I'm not really a fan of the new Arno leather but its "horses for courses" I guess, and I hope that enough people like it well enough to keep our beloved EG afloat.

Depends on what you plan to wear them with, imo. I have both and I wear the LHS a lot more. It goes well with everything from shorts to a suit, but it's best with the stuff in between: jeans or khakis and ocbd or wool pants, sport coat and tie. Picadillys are a little more formal looking imo and thus better for suits or more formal sport coats and ties. Here's a pic of both models next to each other.

thanks for the perspective and photos! what about build quality & durability? i'm drawn to the durability of shell but i've not been very impressed by alden construction vs EG.. in your experience does this actually change anything day to day?

Alden does have less refined stitching and is generally less careful about quality control than EG. But I think they'd be equally durable. At least I haven't noticed any difference in the years of owning them. It is true that shell is supposed to be super abrasion-resistant, and that's proven true on the shell boots I have (here's a post that illustrates this). But I've also heard that if shell develops a tear, that can quickly get larger. Myron Glaser of Glaser Designs showed me this once, but, fortunately, I haven't experienced it.

Wow, great post - I'm also considering Crockett and Jones cordovan loafers - does C&J reach ED levels of finish / construction? I think C&J cordovan would also be close to the price of EG calf

overall just trying to reach the best "fit" and value for my money here for a robust longlasting shoe :)

CJ fit and finish are better than Alden’s, at least in my experience. Also, you can get colors of shell in CJ loafers that are difficult to find (and generally more expensive) in Aldens. CJ and EG also do unlined shell, which Alden won’t make anymore.

However, part of the charm of the LHS is its rustic look and a little wonkiness doesn’t look as out of place on the LHS. Although there are many things to like about my CJ Harvard in the abstract — and my wife prefers them for some reason — the overall look is somewhere in between, neither here nor there. I find myself opting for something else most of the time.

But that’s me. The best value will be the shoes _you_ wear more often. I can’t say which those will be.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
