singapore
Prague
chicago

Despite my love for chicago, I am not quite sure I agree.
I think chicago does incredibly well when economics are included--its not cheap but compared to the other places that offer similar amenities, it is quite affordable (especially considering the job options and their respective levels of pay).

But if finances are thrown out the window like Pio suggested...I don't know how well chicago stands up. I'd probably have to choose somewhere with a more interesting regional geography (i.e. not flat as glass) and use money to make up for any other shortcomings.

In 18 months i will be eligible for 3 months long service leave - my wife is pushing for a summer in France

What will you do for an entire summer in France? I've been there 3 times for much shorter periods of time and it was "okay", but not a place I intend to visit for leisure. Haha

I'd live in Berlin for a year or two. Did that in Rome not long ago, it was pretty excellent minus not being about to order anything online. Oh and everything closing between roughly 1 to 3:30pm.

I spent a few weeks living in Interlaken Switzerland...if you love skiing I highly recommend putting this on your bucket list.

Chicago is listed on this thread way more than it deserves. This is likely due to there being an abundance of native Chicagoans on the forum--local pride and all that. I sort-of get it. My viewpoint is extremely jaded when it comes to Chicago. That said, I could live there and be happy. But in the fantasy of choosing to set up shop literally anywhere on the globe.... I don't at all understand why people are picking Chicago (other than local pride I guess?).

I'm actually being headhunted right now for a Chicago job. It's pretty equal to my current job, but higher paying. My reluctance is mainly at moving from Miami to Chicago, I visited there twice and I loved visiting...but didn't feel the "I can move here" vibe. My friends who have moved there like it, but absolutely hate the weather
