Hello everybody,

interesting, because I find the "Imperial" Line of Cheaney quite attractive, in partcular the dressy balmoral and derby boots. Yet are they comparable to the C&J handgrade line?

The lasts I think are more "classic British" compared to Crockett & Jones. I dropped by theiry shop on Jermyn street the last time I was in London.

Best regards

Pascal

I don't have any pairs of Cheaney yet, but I really like many of their styles, and also find their lasts more traditionally British.

Yeah, the lasts are great and the Imperial line designs are great and very classically British. Pascal, if you are able to view shoes in person at their store, that should resolve the issue I had with the Imperial line shoes I tried to buy.

Despite, the aesthetic and finishing issues I had, they are very solidly built shoes. They felt tank like, although it made it really hard to judge fit. I found the heel and ankle too roomy for me, so I would make sure you have a good fit there.

Did I see someone say the Imperial line is going for €1000 now? That seems very wrong to me as their direct online price is only $1000 CAD right now, which should only be about €6-700.

Thanks ForwardPleats,

the prices are around 800-920€, because with taxes that costs that much. In the EU then the import duties are added and you easily come to up to 1000€.

UK shoemakers, and retail products in general, loose competitiveness due to the import duties and 19% EU-VAT tax for Germany. Usually another ~25% are added to the retail price. If the UK retailer does not deduct the UK sales / VAT tax, one effectivly pays the sales / VAT taxes twice, the UK and German ones. That is not really nice.

The balomoral and sleek derby boots in black are my taste.

I personally also like dressy balmoral, derby and chelsea boots with jeans and chinos, besides a suit.

Best regards

Pascal

I don't know if it was just bad luck, but I did not have a great experience when trying to buy some Imperial line loafers a couple years back. There were real issues with the leather, including some very unsightly growth and bite marks in prominent locations, as well as notably sloppy finishing. It was really disappointing considering the price point as I bought and returned like 4 pairs online trying to find a single good pair. I would like to hope they were pandemic related issues.

If they ironed out the issues, I would strongly reconsider buying shoes from Cheaney again. I find their lasts and designs generally more aesthetically pleasing and elegant than C&J, whose generally long, pointy toes I really don't like.

I have had the same experience in the past, but not anymore in the last few years

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
