I was watching Rope last night. Jimmy Stewart wears a wonderful 3 button peak lapel mid-dark grey flannel with white shirt and solid navy tie. Looks great. Myself, I'm thinking of a 3 piece charcoal one button notch lapel for my next order. I already have a charcoal herringbone, but I love charcoal.

Charcoal is such a great colour to wear...It is versatile ,elegant and warmer than the flatter black....

DB chalkstripe is a flannel classic. If you really have to get a SB, get a vest.

Maybe it is just me, but most guys don't get a charcoal color, they get a gray (like a medium or light gray) suit and they look washed out in it. I'm not a fan of gray suits. Charcoal yes, gray no.

This is more of a medium grey then charcoal, no? I prefer a medium grey like the one pictured myself and was also contemplating having my next suit made in it. Im thinking of possibly adding some quirk to freshin up the look. Maybe hacking pockets or a ticket pocket? Definitely go with the solid its much more versatile and classic.

I was thinking more of the global look of it ...If your hair colour is lighter ,you will look better with a mid-grey ...I'm quite dark and charcoal grey is a beeter option...

I was trying to show you guys the silhouette and the general look of a 3 button solid grey flannel suit...

This is what I am looking for for my next suit. I prefer this medium grey to charcoal and cutting of this 3 piece is brilliant. Do you have the brand and fabric code? Is this kind of flannel suit suitable for winter only (I live in Asia and it's rather hot in summer).

Flannel is obviously not a tropical garnment but in cooler temperatures ,you could wear it...

The mid-grey look is growing on me ....Solid mid-grey or charcoal look very sleek..

I think a charcoal with chalkstripes, double breasted in particular, is very classy. A previous post mentioned Hitchcock's Rope, but you can also check out the chief detective in Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder; he wears a nice DB chalkstripe flannel. I have a light grey DB chalkstripe, though I prefer charcoal, and I've paired a RLPL black cashmere DB sportcoat with a pair of RL charcoal flannel trousers. Really good combination.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
