Hi, Im curious what people think the best tux shirts are. I have some money to burn (graduation cash) and think a good tux shirt is a fine investment, but not sure if T&A, Borrelli or Zegna is the way to go. I love classic tux shirts, somewhere between Cary Grant and Daniel Craig in the last Bond. I'd appreciate any feedback on the what you all think. Going to NYC Tuesday so am anxious to grab something when there.

MANY THANKS,
ZP

Brooks Brothers tux shirts are good value for money. They sell one with a detachable collar if you can live with the single french cuffs.

Formal shirts are supposed to have single link cuffs, philistine.

I got my classic tux shirt at paul stewart. It's perfect: slim fitting, with correct bib, NO pleats, wing tip collar, of course, french cuff. I despise those who wear a fold down collar with a bowtie (even though it is supposed to be the more modern look).

What's a detachable collar? I am looking for a tux shirt too, and was actually thinking about spending 95 bucks for the CT one.

there are Many options.
self pleat
swiss pleat
pique bibs.

French cuff or link cuff
wing collar or lay down collar. do not get a detachable collar

buy what you like that fits. In three years it will turn yellow and will never be white enough to wear again, so you will need a new shirt

Might I ask why? It's certainly not incorrect, and has been done for decades, (perhaps even from the invention of the dinner jacket) by many people who knew a thing or two about clothes.

I think for the more "relaxed" version of a evening dress shirt a turndown collar with a pleated front and french cuffs (I'm not exactly sure, but I think single link cuffs are rather appropriate for an attachable stiff wing collar shirt than for a "soft" evening shirt) a turndown collar is the best option.
Acutally I think that this kind of a softer evening dress shirt is the best alternative to the stiff detachable collar, boiled front etc. shirts and far better than a sewn-on wing collar.
I own all of those three kinds of evening shirts and have to admit, that I don't really like to wear the sewn-on wing.
Of course nothing matches the elegance of a crisp attachable collar!

on a serious note, douchebag, I thought single cuffs were for white tie and doubles for black. Is that not true, or are you using "formal" in an esoteric sense?

Sort of true, but it exposes the shallowness of your understanding.

Single cuffs are ALWAYS required on wing collar shirts, whether worn with white or black tie. These shirts are of course required with white tie, while only optional with black. Double cuffs are always incorrect with wing collars, and always incorrect with white tie.

I have a french cuff wing collar shirt (Finamore Napoli), am I going to hell?

If hell is my only future, can it be converted to a more austere single cuff by a good tailor, or will it look 'gimpy'?
