There is still something about Elliot Richardson that just makes him seems so upstanding yet still quite a modern, at ease and renaissance man. The archetypical broad shouldered, six feet tall and blue blooded meritocrat for whom the younger Ralph Lauren would have undoubtedly envisioned at least stylistically as what was the best coming out from the New World.

Whether his suits, blue pin-stripe shirts or polka dot ties never seems to look old or tired, the tortoise or buffalo horn spectacles accentuates the lawyer like demeanour but never felt distant or out of touch. Even when standing next to the scion of the Rockefeller dynasty, his aura of self discipline still outshines that of Nelson, it takes some effort to make everything just work and in harmony, and he governs this exceptionally.

Richardson was a genuine Boston Brahamin. Rockefeller was a nouveau riche, relatively
speaking, whose grandfather was the founder of Standard Oil. The Rockefellers were old
Huguenot stock who had been in America since the 17th century, but at best, middle-class.
I saw Rockefeller up close at a campaign rally in college. He did not dress trad/Ivy like
Richardson, wearing a peak lapel mid grey two button suit, not at all sack-shaped. Some
kind of hybrid Savile Row/ "Continental" cut. Rocky was a broad shouldered handsome
guy who could work a crowd as well as any "ward-healer" politician.

Both Ricardson and Rockefeller belonged to a now extinct political species: Liberal Republicans.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
