Are velvet blazers seasonal?

Can you wear velvet in spring/summer as long as you limit it to indoors and at night?

I recently bought a gorgeous one-button black velvet blazer which I've only had an opportunity to wear once last winter.

I'm attending a family wedding in this July. Since the reception is indoors and at night, I was thinking of wearing the blazer with a shirt, bow tie, and gray slacks in place of a tux/suit. My wife insists that the velvet material makes the blazer seasonal and I can only wear it in the fall/winter.

I'm wondering what everyone's thoughts are on this...

She's right. But there is always the 1 in 100 guys who can break all the rules and still look like a rock star. That said... you're probably not him. :D

I did this once last summer and regretted it. First because it was sweltering even for the few minutes that I was inside, and second because I was asked the whole night if I were really hot in that velvet jacket.

This puts me off getting a smoking jacket.

Going to someone else's wedding wearing a velvet jacket is just nonsense anyway.

I agree with this. In my case, I was wearing it to a get together at a bar the night of the rehearsal dinner. I wouldn't wear one to the ceremony unless given some indication towards lounge attire from the wedding party.

Never in summer. Stay with Fall & Winter though I still wear mine on crisp spring evenings.

Haha, yeah, I guess I pretty much knew the answer before I even asked the question. I was just hoping against all odds that I was wrong.

And, Fidel, you're wrong. . . I'm DEFINITELY not that 1 in a 100 guy.

Velvete jackets would be comfortable only when wore in the right weather and also at some pompous occassion. A ROYAL blue to Black Velvette jacket looks classic though

Pompous occasion? I wore mine to a (nice) bar a few times, so I'm going to have to disagree with that.
