I have gathered from this thread that at least 50% of sf posters have no sense of wonder.

I have a sense of wonder, I wonder how can so many people have an interest in dark desolate vaccum.

Not that interested in the space between your ears. The universe on the other hand... :p

Now for non-snark. Space is beautiful and fascinating in the same way math is beautiful, except there are prettier pictures of space. It's all stuff that we have not made, was here before us, and will be here long after us, self-assembled into structures of incomprehensible size and beauty governed entirely by the laws of physics, which are also external to us. I guess it's sort of like art or literature, you have to make an effort to learn about it to truly appreciate it. It becomes far more than a desolate vacuum.

The chances that there isn't life outside our solar system is essentially zero, and the chances that there still is or was life at one point within our own solar system beyond earth is extremely high. I don't know how that can't be fascinating.

Because I likely will never know it in my lifetime. Pretty pictures, though.

That, and when one considers the absolutely incomprehensible distances and quantities of matter and energy we're talking about, it's utterly shocking.

Personally I still love the fact that only 4% of the universe is made of matter/energy that we actually understand. Rest is "dark" and we know only that it exists.
