What are people's experiences over time with Rota trousers that have elastane in the fabric?

I picked up a pair in the sale. The product page says 100% cotton, but the pair I received lists 98% cotton and 2% stretch. (There are a few other differences from the product page too.) '

I don't own many stretchy garments besides socks and underwear—and no stretchy trousers that I can think of—so I am just trying to asses before making the call of whether to keep them or not. Do they hold their pleat/crease and shape well?
No experience with Rota, but I buy almost exclusively pants with at least some synthetic material (1-3% elastane, usually) and have never noticed them underperforming all natural fabrics in terms of crease and shape retention.

A couple percents of stretch for heavy cottons = godsend. Really makes the trousers far more comfortable to wear and perform better with regards to knee bagging/stretching. That's fine (and even wanted) for jeans to start shaping and bagging in places with wear, but it can be unsightly for a more tailored garment. There's a reason for those fabrics to feature prominently in the bespoke/MTM cotton bunches from the best mills. Same goes with jackets, btw. I know some people will always want a 100% cotton, but the ones with a couple % stretch are simply more comfortable. Cotton often has no give compared to wool, so we would fit someone on a wool try-on jacket, and they would find the resulting cotton/cord jacket to fit tighter across the back. Same measurements, tighter feel. A 100% heavy moleskin suit is a nightmare to wear, unless it's cut with a lot more ease than one's normal pattern.

If the product page doesn't indicate the correct composition, that is an error on our part and we should correct it though. Let us know which item it is and we'll make sure to correct the description

Thanks, all. Gonna think on it some more.

Greg, these are the pants:

I'm guessing there were just slight changes made between the initial iteration and the restock that aren't reflected on the page?

In addition to the difference in fabric content, the pair I received isn't lined to the knee, and the constructions of the waistband and rear pockets are different.

I'm also wondering if it affects other Rota restocks, such as these, where there are inconsistencies between the photos and product listings re: fabric content.

I was actually going to ask about this exact point. I ordered a few beanies from the sale and found them to fit like this from largest to smallest:

GRP >> Inis Meain cashmere/merino donegal mix > William Lockie cashmere >> Inis Meain merino wool.

Does that align with others' experiences? I did find the IM cashmere donegal mix beanie to fit bigger than the IM merino wool beanie (not sure if the cashmere mix beanie dizzy was referring to was donegal or not).

Has anyone tried multiple of the IM merino wool beanies and do they all fit small? I'm wondering if it's worth trying for a different colorway in case the one I received was just small to spec (Alpine).
Yep, the donegal one was what I was referring to that is larger and the weave is looser. I got the teal blue in merino and it fits smaller. Still wore it today, I just let it sit a little higher on my head.

Finally pulled the trigger on these Paraboots, which arrived yesterday. Teenage son's reaction was, "what the hell are those?" which is about what I expected, LOL! Thanks!

Help on the Informale easy pants. The measurements on the 34 are 15inches more or less. I assume that's the elastic kicking in. Wondering if that would work on someone who is 33.5 to 34 in in the waist. Those who have the trouser...thoughts? Too big? I am of two minds about the mix of formal/informal but fit first.

Some easy pants are too pajama-like for me but the Rotas are nice. Just loose enough to be extra-comfy without looking baggy.
The rota's look quite "smart" even in the easy configuration, and the elastic seems barely noticeable if one were to wear them with shirt tucked in. I like them, but interested more in darker colors (the nailhead wool does look lovely).

I don't mind the trousers being fuller. I have some linen drawstring trousers from Stoffa that are cut quite full and which I enjoy wearing especially in the hot summer. Also looking at the Informale easy version, which look smart but with a more noticeable elastic waist band.

What Rota model has the highest rise? Looking at the Manhattan and Brooklyn "high-rise" models, as well as the one listed "higher-rise," they measure to 11.4 inches which seems only high-rise in the Italian sense...Is there a Rota trouser with at least a 12" rise?

I’m not sure about specific measurements, but I can confirm that both the Manhattan and Westside cuts are truly high rise when worn.

I was looking at this exact pair as well. They are killer!

I realize this might be a well trodden subject, but how do folks find the fit on these? I'm a 7 US/ 40 EU in sneaker sizes, so i'm wondering if the 40 will be too big or not. I've read them fitting TTS to people sizing down a full size. Would be helpful to add a few datapoints to help with the decision!

The manhattan/westside and Brooklyn would have the highest rise that we offer. It's a proper high rise, we exclude the waistband from the measurement fwiw, so with it included it's prob closer to 13".

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
