I am a true size 40 regular in most sport coats and purchased the Border from the stalwart O'Connell's (Buffalo, NY). I bought the 42 to layer the coat. It's a very large jacket but I think that is sort of the point, fit-wise it means to oversize and then allow a lining to be zipped in. I had a Border 20+ years ago and bought an exceptionally large 46 for layering---and that was a mistake, just too big. I feel confident that the same arm hole problem might appear with a 40 when I'm wearing a tweed underneath, so the 42 was the call. This was originally (I think) a hunting/shooting jacket (stuff that bird in the pocket), so the oversize was part of the design. It's still one of my favorite jackets but it has a slouchy, country look and that seems to me unavoidable and the point of the design.
I was just watching this TV series just yesterday on shoplifting here in the uk on how they put elaborate rips and hidden pockets in jackets. I was like, just buy a barbour with a vest bruvva!, I can hold 4 steaks, two cans of baked beans and a packet of fries with room to spare for some blurays. That's like a luxury night in for alot of British people. Innit.

Disclaimer, I do not condone such acts.

Non-Barbour owner here. I'm looking to pick up a classic jacket in classic materials but honestly I'm a bit confused by all the names and types.

Bedale, Beaufort, Ashford etc. At is the difference and is there a line I should stay away from? Not looking to read through 377 pages. Best place to KOP?

Here are some links that may help you in making a decision:

The main three 'old-skool' style Barbours are the Bedale (short), Beaufort (mid-length) and Border (longer). Some people describe them as "boxy" They're roomy and boxy and designed for layering underneath. The Northumbria is a heavier weight version of the Border. The Ashby is a slimmer-fitting version of the Bedale. The Bristol is a longer version of the Ashby and the Beausby is a slimmer-fitting version of the Beaufort. There are many other jackets which I won't go on about because a) I don't know enough about them and b) this reply would go on forever.

Decide whether you want a slimmer fitting jacket or a "boxy" style jacket. When you say "classic materials" please clarify whether you are referring to the named 'classic' variants of the jackets in Sylkoil, or whether you are using the word 'classic' to describe the 'original thornproof' finish.

Regarding Ashby, Bristol, Beausby (and some others): these polyester-lined sleeves. Some people dislike these because they lead to collection of condensation on cold days, resulting in wet sleeves. I don't know how often this happens or how bad the problem is because I've never had one of those jackets.

Lastly, check out the 'Wax & Tartans' videos (made by Purplelabel) on YouTube for an in-depth look at some of the models.

For jackets that feature detachable hoods and liners, these accessories are sold separately.

Regarding those with polyester lined sleeves, there terrible against the skin but no worse when your wearing jumpers and jackets and they slide easy on and off.

I soon gave my ashby away after discovering that the sleeves do not breath at all during warmer days when you have nothing covering your arms. Ashby is not a professionals choice either because of the tailored cut so you have very little freedom of movement.

Hey guys, I am considering to get a long coat (northumbria or border) in Sage but without wax, but local retailer says that Sage color comes only in waxed cloth, is it true?

It would defeat the reason for having a northumbria or border, those only come waxed.

Buy the 3/4 length trench then if that works for you.

Thank you, yes that is very useful. A lot to absorb.

I’m a 40/42 in a suit coat depending on cut and have a couple old pop in liner boarders and Northumbrias. I’m 5”9 and the c40 fits just right for me. I also have a couple Beauforts and bedales with the zip in liner and they fit over a thick jumper just right. The arms are a little longer in the newer style coats. Maybe a centimetre. Stockman wise I rock a 38.

I had a 44 border that I got tailored. A couple tailors declined to take it in. Apparently the panels are stitched to the lining not sure how true that is. Found a tailor in the end who narrowed the sleeves and took in the chest an inch or so. Looked good but I ended up moving the jacket on when I found a cheap one in my size.
Not sure if that helps you decide. Ultimately I’d buy the size I am in a suit jacket.

Does anyone wear a brown coloured wax jacket i.e beadle/beufort ?
I tend to buy my barbour jackets used off eBay and thinking of adding a brown jacket to the collection.

Nothing wrong with brown, the olive jackets are slightly on the brown side of green and I like that.
