that's only for double sole. The factory doesn't have a machine that can cut the closed channel through two soles like that so they have to do it by hand and they refused to do so. Single soles will stay closed channel.

Gotcha, thanks for clarifying! Is that also why these don't have the beveled waist or was that an intentional design feature? Would have been really cool if they tapered from double to single.

So overall, they are very high quality shoes that in my opinion are above that of Crockett & Jones and Church's of the UK because they have the same high quality materials and construction but they have some finer details (beveled waist, closed channel, burnishing) to take it up a notch, along with being at a much lower price point.

They are more refined in appearance than Allen Edmonds and Alden, who are much closer in price range, but those fine details of the J. Fitzpatrick shoes are also at least a step or two ahead of these US brands. J Fitzpatrick shoes are also much more sleek and don't have the sometimes referred "blobby" nature that AE and Alden are said to have.



So yes I have placed the shoes above C&J because of the fine details listed above. The general construction is the same and the overall feel of the shoe is the same as well. I am only comparing them to C&J main line and not the Hand Grade, but these J Fitzpatrick shoes closer in level to the hand grade C&J.

I didn't say far superior to Alden. I said that the finer details in J Fitzpatrick put them above by at least a step or two. The lasts are more sleek as well, but the last design is personal opinion. I wear AE and Alden at times too, so I have the right to talk about last design. They all have uses depending on what you are wearing the shoes for.
I do have to say that Alden shoes feel much more sturdy, but that doesn't mean that they are superior by any means. Alden shoes are much more bulky and heavy, so I would expect for them to feel more sturdy, but the finesse used to keep a well constructed shoe light and comfortable is a great plus in my opinion, even though it is not needed to make a great shoe.

You can say what you wish, since this is a forum, but please try to keep disrespectful comments to other members as well as brands to a minimum. Of course this is all my opinion, but I am very particular in what details i discuss with footwear, and since there isn't a numbering scale to be fully objective in measures, I try to keep the subjective comments as professional and unbiased as possible.

I am only giving critiques on this brand and comparing it to different brands (to help others get an idea of the level of quality) because I am involved in this industry and have a knowledge of many facets of footwear. I consult for various shoe companies around the world and lecture on the topic of footwear, so I do know just a bit about footwear. And on top of that, I am a foot/ankle specialist in the medical field so I have that aspect covered too.

Usually a double sole is a straight finish on the waist. Not many taper that. It takes hand work.

Well, thats a good question. I ordered the leather in January and Horween has been about 5 months late in delivering it as it only came at the end of September. Then as luck would have it, they sent the dark brown instead of this lovely roasted coffee. Since i could not afford any more delay I am having it made in the darker brown now and not this amazing color here. But they should be with me no later than mid November. Sorry. This is one of the downsides in being a shoe company: having to rely on tanneries!!
