What was your epiphany moment with style? A Cary Grant movie, your grandfather's three piece suit, James Bond?

My uncle had a whole closet full of Paul Stuart and a collection of vintage cufflinks - his clothes always fit like a movie star's and having grown up in the suburbs, he had an exciting looking life that I wanted. It seemed to me like it looked like he was always on the way to somewhere important - I feel like that's why I like fashion, it makes life seem more exciting even when it's ordinary. Oh and the key piece was his Breguet watch, I've coveted them ever since!

Still saving for it - sigh - but hopefully one day!

My best friend Dieter from school days had a longing influence on my style. He combined so effortlessly traditional German style with heavy Prog influence of the underground diskothek including Trachtenanzug jackets worn with a cellophane shirt, black jeans and blue Adidas Spezial.

Eh, I've always loved fashion, I wanted to be a fashion designer growing up. I applied to some fashion schools as well as standard universities, but my mother thought that becoming a fashion designer would make me gay.

Yeah, lol. Well as it turns out . . . I'm not gay and never have been. But I wouldn't compromise on the creativity front and ended up studying fine arts instead.

What's such the problem if tomorrow turns you gay? I found Dieter to be gay at age 15 but it never bothered our friendship any or his style.

Pierce Brosnan in the tv-series "Remington Steele" back in th 80s. The man seemed to be born in a suit.

My cousin came to visit us from Europe when I was 12 and he was 16. He had incredible suits, French cuff shirts, suede jackets lined in fleece, awesome sunglasses and he smoked. Man was he ever cool.

The question, imho, should be more specific. What style are we pertaining to? Are we talking about SF/AAAC level style, or we talking about style you were when you were hitting puberty? I'm sure all of us went through different phases before reaching this point where we are right now. Growing up in the 80s, I embarassingly tried to emulate, most of the time unsuccessfully, emulating certain celebrities' and TV or movie shows' style: New Order, Tears for Fears, The Cure, 80s Bowie, Robert Palmer, Miami Vice, Remington Steele, etc......

Good question! As I think about it, style has been a journey I've been traveling most of my life. My Dad had style. He was a building contractor, but he looked good even when he wore his work clothes. My Mom was the show! She worked on Wall Street in the late 50s and early 60s, and I loved how she looked - tailored suits, skirts, dresses (never trousers) when she walked through the door in the evenings. Movies and movie stars were an inspiration as well. Like Cary Grant, I always want to be Cary Grant! I envied Steve McQueen's look. Shaft and SuperFly were inspirations too. During my college years, I had the good fortune to work at an exclusive men's store in Century City where I learned about the qualities of good fabric and tailoring. After law school, I met the woman who I would later marry. We were in D.C., but she was 100% L.A. and taught me how to blend casual with business dressing. I've had many other style and fashion inspirations. I've been fortunate to know good people in that business, who were more interested in how I looked than how much I could spend. I'm also happy to say that I'm still on this journey and still learning.

when I was still a very young engineer, I got a job with a top manager at the bank.

He was the former CIO and was made Project's management VP, he took me as his assistant.

He teached me how to dress and how to behave in upper management meetings in order to earn respect from the other high level managers.

His advice was invaluable.
