I would not wear a cardigan with sleeves under a jacket. I have one (possibly more but at least one) cardigan vest that I sometimes wear under jackets. I also have a few pull over knit vests that I wear with tweeds.

Manton, are you say no sleeved knitwear under jackets, or just no sleeved cardigans?

Let me re-phrase. I don't mind them much with SC's (especially sweaters or vests with no buttons), however they bother me a lot with suits. To me it is a sad attempt at making your suit look like a 3 piece. That may not be the intension, however to me it just looks bad.

Yeah, I mean, what's the point? Are your arms that cold? Plus, it must make moving a pain.

I often wear single-ply, solid cashmere v-necks with odd jackets in the winter. I haven't found them to ever limit my movement, though I would say that a high-gauge wool is likely a different story.

I like a sweater with sleeves because it allows for more flexibility with layering (if you wear a vest, you're forced to keep your jacket on, IMO, as sweater vests on their own look quite frumpy). Furthermore, the majority of my jackets are a more open weave. Living down south, it doesn't make sense to buy a 14oz tweed or a heavy cash/wool job that can be worn for two months of the year, though YMMV. So while it may not be a problem of my arms getting cold, the whole sweater acts as a better insulator.

I guess I go with sleeved knitwear for versatility. However, it is worth noting I hardly wear suits and would never wear a sweater with a suit. Looks too European soccer coach (not that there aren't worse things).

I don't hesitate to take my jacket off with a vest (or without a vest, for that matter). The only thing I won't do (any more) is show suspenders. I wear them but either under a vest or I don't take my jacket off.

I agree on not showing suspenders, though I only wear knitwear with odd rigs and I don't wear suspenders with odd combos, so that thwarts any issues.

It could just be down here, but at my age (20s) I don't think I see anyone wearing sweater vests. Fleece vests, on the other hand, are ubiquitous (though obviously not worn with tailored clothing).

I noticed last year a lot of guys doing the puffer vest over the suit jacket on brisk days. I think it was popularized by GQ or something. I personally just go flannel and a scarf if it's not chill enough for an overcoat.

I've only had one coworker comment on my suspenders, though I am sure more have seen them, just because the leather part shows sometimes if I am sitting.

As noted, I like sweaters with sportcoats. Prefer sleeveless, but I have one sleeved cardigan that works great. Thin and textury -- looks better under a coat than as a cardigan. But agree with PB re: suits. Not my cuppa.

Luciano Barbera's a fan, for what that's worth.

im with pB x 2 here.

1. i dont think i have even seen a sweater/cardigan with a suit that i liked how it looked.

2. do not like puffer jackets with SCs or suits in general. if the puffer is shorter than the jacket, and you can see the bottom of the jacket below the puffer, or any coat really, i think it looks really silly. if the puffer is at least longer than the the jacket, then i guess maybe i have seen some looks like that that i have liked. i think the italians do that yes? luxury puffers and what not? i know i have seen some on STF and they looked quite nice.

I did mean sleeveless. So it sounds like going with 1 natural and 1 grey should cover my bases.

Do you extend this to more casual stuff? Say a pullover vest with a tweedy/checked suit like the DoW or Jean-Pierre Leaud in Day For Night?

If it is a suit, I'm not a fan, even if it is tweed. I mean, do you really need a sweater under a tweed suit? You're just attracting even more attention. At that point it is purely stylistic and not functional, thus looks affected, imo.
