Vests always looks rather cool as a clothing item on hot days.

However, is it possible for men to wear vests without coming over as either gay or a thug/wanabe thug?

I know of some people who don't really care for the look of just wearing a vest and no jacket, but to each his own. This look is a little more casual, but what seems to be popular is pairing a vest, shirt and tie with jeans.

A bit more formal of a look. Also, I think it really helps if you roll your sleeves up.

hey there mr. melanzane, just ran across your question and thought i'd chime in.

i think the simplest answer is that tank top undershirts -- that is -- those tank tops designed to be worn as undershirts, should not be worn by men as outerwear in a social situation.

meaning, if you're putting together an outfit, your ribbed tank top / a-shirt / singlet that you wear as an undershirt, should only be worn in that capacity -- under your shirt.

if you're dressing to work in the yard, or in some other similar non-social capacity, and staying cool is most important, then it would be ok to sport your tank top undershirt only. i suppose the other potential exception is that if you're performing manual labor outside, and your other colleagues wear those types of shirts, it would not be out of place for you to also -- though a lightweight t-shirt will also keep you cool and protect you more from the sun exposure.

if you're set on wearing a tank top as your outer t-shirt, then don't wear a tank top undershirt. purchase a proper tank top that has been designed to be worn as outerwear.

hope that information helps!
