As others have noted. VW and Porsche have had a parts and car sharing relationship for... well, forever. The formal merger of the companies won't do anything other than give Porsche even more control of the relationship and cement their control over the rest of the brands in the Volkswagen, err, Porsche Auto Group

As long as they maintain distance between the 2 brands, and don't end up sharing the same dealership with both Porsche and VW sold under the same roof by the same sales people. That said, cheapening of the brand is real. Isn't it what happened to Mercedes once they started peddling the low priced C-class...or the Jag with their Ford Contour based X- type? Parts sharing may be universal and real....yet the brand identity separation is a tricky business. Lexus managed to pull it off flawlessly

I agree, keeping the brands separate is essential IMO.
