I had to ask the waiter 4 times to bring me diced garlic...WTF I understand that it was dinner time and they were busy but I asked for the garlic at the beginning, when she brought the drinks, and then the food comes out and still no garlic.

I was using the garlic with olive oil and salt, with bread as an appetizer.

So many of the complaints here are generated by poorly trained FOH staff.

Jesus the latest edition of Food & Wine was just horrendously awful (in fact, the last few have been tremendously bad). I'm just glad I don't pay for my subscription.

One of the questions for a joint Bourdain/Ripert interview was "What do you think of food trends" not "what do you think of the latest food trend XYZ" just a general "food trends". Yeah, that'll be an insightful answer.

Then they showed some dickhead who has a pizza food truck that you can tell he's gone to such incredible lengths to turn it into something grand and it kind of showcases why food trucks are such a ******* stupid food trend (SEE F&W--THAT'S A DECENT APPROACH TO A TOPIC) because its like, the cost of outfitting this commercial truck and then driving it around and generator costs etc etc etc are surely equivalent to restaurant and just the idea of "hey, let's create a rest--sorry--place for people to purchase food cooked for them that is effectively no different than a food court and call ourselves 'edgy' and 'independent'". And like sure, I get that some people may start food trucks because they can't afford to start a restaurant fine, but even in Atlanta its clear they are becoming so large and so big that they are making themselves too expensive for startups and most new ones are now merely mobile outposts of heretofore established restaurants (side note about the absurdity of food trucks in Atlanta... because we have no pedestrian culture, they have to congregate en masse at parks on set days of the week for lunch or dinner to make them economically viable. That means, people enjoy going to de-glorified food courts, not knowing what food or even what type will be served, all to stand around in the famed, mild Southern summer. :fonz:)

There is a selection of wine I want at K&L in San Francisco, where I have several hundred in gift cards waiting to be spent, but it's the time of year where heat damage when shipping is likely. *sigh*

I have noticed around my parts that spot prawns are priced higher but don't look as vibrant compared to prior years. I read a stat somewhere that ~70% of B.C. spot prawns are exported to Japan. I wonder if the proportion exported has increased, and expanded to other markets like China.

In any case, I've eaten far less of them this year.

I've heard it was closer to 90% but that number is dropping because of higher local consumption. Certainly where I am in BC there are tons available live, fresh and flash frozen. I haven't noticed a drop in quality but prices have certainly risen.

Yeah, general availability is not a huge issue for me either, but this is what I was used to last year, for $4 less a lb:

At the other extreme, and not really a representative example I know, but I was at Whole Foods on the weekend and saw a young urban couple asking for a puny bag of tails only. The look they gave each other was something when the seafood clerk told them it would be $53.

What vendor is greasing you with those gift cards? :smarmy:
